Children's Knitted Hood Pattern

A snug-fitting two-color hood, for girl or boy, is the perfect answer to Jack Frost weather … you'll enjoy the interest of working in a pattern. Make it in school colors for an added attraction!

Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Medium and Large Sizes are in parentheses.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" SUPER FIN­GERING, 3 Ply (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 1 (2, 2) skeins of No. 909 Scarlet (S) and 1 skein of No. 1 White (W) for all Sizes.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 3.

GAUGE: Pattern: 15 sts = 2 inches; 9 rows = 1 inch.

Starting at front edge with Scarlet cast on 104 (112, 120) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 (1¼, 1½) inches. Next row: P across. Work in pattern as follows: 1st row—Small Size: K 3 W. Medium Size: K 1 W, k 3 S, k 3 W. Large Size: K 3 W, k 1 S, k 1 W, k 3 S, k 3 W. All Sizes: * K 3 S, k 3 W, k 1 S, k 1 W, k 3 S, k 3 W. Repeat from * 6 more times. Small Size: K 3 S. Medium Size: K 3 S, k 3 W, k 1 S. Large Size: K 3 S, k 3 W, k 1 S, k 1 W, k 3 S. NOTE: When changing colors, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes. Carry unused yarn loosely across wrong side to maintain st gauge. Chart shows beginning and end of each row with the 14-stitch repeat between. 2nd row: P across following 2nd row of chart. Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) and, starting with the 3rd row, follow chart to top. Repeat these 6 rows for pattern. Work in pattern until total length is 5½ (6, 6½) inches ending with a p row. Bind off loosely 36 (40, 44) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

BACK … Keeping continuity of pattern work across remaining 32 sts until length is same as bound-off edges, ending with a p row. Slip these sts on a safety pin. Sew side edges of back to the adjacent bound-off edges.

NECKBAND … With right side facing and Scarlet, pick up and k 30 (34, 38) sts evenly along left lower edge (incl ribbing) slip 32 sts from safety pin on left-hand needle and k across; pick up and k 30 (34, 38) sts evenly along right lower edge (incl ribbing). Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing on these 92 (100, 108) sts for 2 (2½, 3) inches. Bind off loosely in ribbing. Press through damp cloth. Sew front seam of neckband.
