Boy's Knitted Block Stitch Scarf Pattern

Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Medium and Large Sizes are in parentheses.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" NYLON & WOOL SPORT YARN, 3 Ply (2 oz. "Tangle- Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 2 (2, 3) skeins of No. 818 Blue Jewel.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 6.

GAUGE: (Blocked): 8 sts = 1¼ inches; 17 rows = 2 inches.

Starting at narrow edge, cast on 56 (64, 72) sts. 1st row: K 4, * k 5, p 3. Repeat from * across ending with k 4. 2nd row: K 4, * k 3, p 5. Repeat from * across ending with k 4. Next 4 rows: Repeat first and 2nd rows alternately twice. 7th row: K 4, * p 3, k 5. Repeat from * across ending with k 4. 8th row: K 4, * p 5, k 3. Repeat from * across ending with k 4. Next 4 rows: Repeat 7th and 8th rows alternately twice. Repeat last 12 rows for pattern. Work in pattern for 34 (44, 54) inches, ending with either the 5th or 11th row. Bind off loosely in pattern. Block to 8 ¾ x 34 (10 x 44, 11 x 54) inches.

FRINGE … Cut 3 strands of yarn, each 6 (8, 10) inches long. Double these strands to form a loop. Insert hook through the end stitch on narrow edge and pull loop through. Draw loose ends through loop and pull up tightly. Make a fringe in every other stitch on each narrow edge. Trim fringe evenly.
