Knitted Turban Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 4 ozs. of No. 515 Dk. Turquoise.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 8, 1 set Double-pointed needles No. 8.

GAUGE:
Stockinette st—4 sts = 1 inch; 7 rnds = 1 inch.
Pattern st—5 sts = 1 inch; 8 worked rows = 1 inch.

NOTE: 2 worked rows appear as 1 row.

CROWN … Starting at center top and using a double-pointed needle, cast on 6 sts. Divide sts evenly among 3 needles. 1st rnd: Being careful not to twist sts, k around. 2nd rnd: K in front and in back of each st (6 sts increased). 3rd rnd: Knit. 4th rnd: (K 1, inc 1 st in next st) 6 times— 18 sts. 5th rnd: K 1, place a marker on needle, (k 3, place a marker on needle) 5 times; k 2. 6th

Slipping markers and increasing 1 st after each marker, k around—6 sts increased. 7th rnd: Slip­ping markers, k around. 8th rnd: Slipping markers, and increasing 1 st before each marker, k around. 9th rnd: Repeat 7th rnd. Repeat last 4 rnds until there are 78 sts on rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Bind off.

BAND … Starting at one end and using knitting needles, cast on 4 sts. 1st row: K 1, p 2, k 1. 2nd row: Inc 1 st in first st, k 1, inc 1 st in next st, k 1. 3rd row: K 1, p to within last st, k 1. 4th row: Inc 1 st in first st, k to within last 2 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 1. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 14 sts ending with a p row. Next row: Sl 1, inc 1 st in each of next 11 sts, k 2-25 sts. Following row: Sl 1, k across. Now work in pattern as fol­lows: 1st row (right side): With yarn in back, sl 1, * k 1, k 1 in the st directly below next st on left-hand needle and slip off the st from left-hand needle—a knit 1 below made. Repeat from * across ending with k 2. 2nd row: Sl 1 as before, k 2, * k 1 below, k 1. Repeat from * across ending with k 3. Repeat last 2 rows alternately until Band is 8 inches longer than head size when stretched and ending with a wrong side row. Next row: K 2, (k 2 tog) 11 times; k 1. Now work as follows: 1st row: K 1, p to last st, k 1. 2nd row: K 1, k 2 tog, k to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. Repeat last 2 rows until 4 sts remain. Next row: (K 2 tog) twice. Bind off.
   To shape crown, place over a round bowl and press through a damp cloth. Mark center of Band. With right side of work facing turn in the first 2 sts along right edge. Starting at center, pin the turned-in edge to the crown at same time stretching the band. Drape free ends to form a knot. Sew band and knot in place.
