Knitted Loopy Hat Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 4 ozs. of No. 330 Sand­stone.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 10.

Milwards Tapestry Needle No. 18.

250 bangle sequins with large holes, 20 mm. size.

Heavy cardboard 4 x 4 inches.

GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches.

1st row—wrong side:P 2, * with yarn in front of work sl 1, p 2. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 1, * p 2 tog, with yarn in front of work, sl 1, O. Repeat from * across ending with p 1. 3rd row: P 1, * with yarn in front of work sl the O, p 2. Repeat from * across ending with p 3 instead of p 2. 4th row: P 1, * with yarn in front of work sl 1, O, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across ending with p 1. Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. Work in pattern until total length is 7½ inches ending with a wrong-side row.

Top—1st row: K in back loop of each st across increasing 1 st in last st—90 sts. 2nd row: (K 8, k 2 tog) 9 times—81 sts. 3rd and all uneven rows: K across. 4th row: (K 7, k 2 tog) 9 times—72 sts. 6th row: (K 6, k 2 tog) 9 times—63 sts. Continue thus decreasing 9 sts evenly on every other row until 9 sts remain. Break off leaving an 18-inch length. Thread this yarn into tapestry needle, draw through remaining sts, pull up tightly and fasten securely on wrong side—center top. Sew back seam. Fold 2 inches of lower edge to wrong side and sew in place.

Sequin Loops: Thread tapestry needle with a 3-yard length of yarn, attach to any st on first ridge at center top. * String a sequin on yarn, pass yarn (with sequin) around the 4 x 4 inch cardboard, make a back st in next st on same ridge—sequin loop made. Repeat from * around. Slip completed sequin loops off cardboard as the work progresses. Make a sequin loop in each st on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th ridges.
