Lady's Fair Isle Mittens Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" SUPER FIN­GERING, 3 Ply ("Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 2 ozs. of No. 835 Periwinkle and 1 oz. of No. 1 White for all sizes.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 1.

GAUGE:
Pattern Stitch—9 sts 1 inch; 11 rows = 1 inch.

RIGHT MITTEN … Starting at cuff with Periwinkle, cast on 56 (64, 72) sts loosely. Work in k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 inches. Now work as follows: NOTE: When chang­ing colors, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes. Mittens are worked in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row). 1st and 2nd rows: Work in stocki­nette st. 3rd row: K 1 Periwinkle, drop Periwinkle, attach White and k 1, * k 1 Periwinkle, k 1 White. Repeat from * across. 4th row: * P 1 Periwinkle, p 1 White. Repeat from * across. For Medium and Large Sizes only: With Periwinkle work 4 rows in stockinette st, then repeat 3rd and 4th rows. For Large Size only: Repeat last 6 rows once more. For all Sizes: With Periwinkle work 2 rows in stockinette st.

NOTE: Chart shows Back of Mittens. Work remainder of each row (Palm) with Periwinkle only, except 19th, 20th, 39th and 40th rows. Work these 4 rows in pattern throughout.

  Starting with first row follow chart until the 14th (10th, 6th) row of chart has been completed—20 (22, 24) rows from last row of ribbing.

THUMB …Work in pattern across the first 29 (33, 37) sts (Back) and place these sts on a stitch holder. K the next 9 (10, 11) sts and cast on 9 (10, 11) sts. Place the 18 (21, 24) sts remaining on left-hand needle on another stitch holder.

Work­ing over the 18 (20, 22) sts, continue in stockinette st until Thumb measures 2 (2¼, 2½) inches or reaches ¼ inch from tip.

To Shape Tip: 1st row: * K 2 tog, k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P across. Break off, leaving an 8-inch length of yarn. Thread a needle with this length, draw through remaining sts, pull up tightly and fasten securely. Sew back seam.

HAND … Slip sts from first stitch holder onto a needle, attach yarn and pick up and k 9 (10, 11) sts across cast-on sts of Thumb; k across 18 (21, 24) sts on 2nd stitch holder. Continue as before over these 56 (64, 72) sts until the 42nd row of chart has been completed.

To Shape Tip: 1st row: K 2 tog, work in pattern across next 25 (29, 33) sts, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., place a center marker on needle, complete row. 2nd row: P across in pattern. 3rd row: * K 2 tog, work to within 2 sts of center marker, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * once. Repeat last 2 rows until 26 (30, 34) sts remain, end­ing with a k row. Break off, leaving a 20-inch length of yarn. Thread a needle with this length, divide sts evenly be­tween the 2 needles and weave sts tog. Sew side seam. Press through damp cloth.

LEFT MITTEN … Work same as Right Mit­ten to within first row of chart. Work first 27 (31, 35) sts for Palm as for Right Mitten and remaining 29 (33, 35) sts for Back following chart until the 14th (10th, 6th) row of chart has been completed.

THUMB … K across first 18 (21, 24) sts and place these sts on a stitch holder. K next 9 (10, 11) sts and cast on 9 (10, 11) sts. Place the 29 (33, 37) sts re­maining on left-hand needle on another stitch holder. Position of Thumb is estab­lished. Complete to correspond with Right Mitten.
