COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 232 (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 7 (8, 8, 9) skeins of Main Color, 5 (6, 6, 7) skeins of First Contrasting Color and 4 (5, 5, 6) skeins of Second Con­trasting Color.

Knitting needles, 1 pair No. 4 and 6.

GAUGE: 5 sts = 1 inch; 7½ rows = 1 inch.

Color Stripes: First Contrasting Color (C C)—20 rows; Main Color (M C)—6 rows; Second Contrasting Color (C C)—20 rows; First C C—6 rows; M C-20 rows; Second C C—6 rows. Repeat first to 78th rows incl for Stripe Pattern throughout.

BACK Starting at lower edge with No. 6 needles and First C C, cast on 87 (93, 97, 103) sts. 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P 1, * k 1, p 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last 2 rows for pattern. Continue in pattern and color stripes as indicated until total length is 13 (13, 13½, 13½) inches, ending with a wrong side row.

Sleeve Shaping: Keeping continuity of pattern and color stripes, cast on 4 sts at end of next 4 rows. There are 103 (109, 113, 119) sts on needle. Next row: K across. Following row: K 2, p 1, * k 1, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. Repeat last 2 rows until length from last cast-on sts is 7¾ (7¾, 8¼, 8¼) inches, ending with a wrong side row.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping: 1st row: K 39 (42, 42, 45) sts. Place remaining 64 (67, 71, 74) sts on a holder to be worked later. 2nd row: Dec 1 st, complete row. 3rd row: Bind off 11 (12, 12, 13) sts, work across to last 2 sts, work 2 sts tog. Repeat last 2 rows once more. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. Bind off remain­ing sts. Place sts from holder on needle, attach yarn at neck edge and bind off first 25 (25, 29, 29) sts for back of neck. Complete other side to correspond, reversing shapings.

FRONT Work same as Back until total length is 10½ (10½, 11, 11) inches, ending with a wrong side row.

Neck Shaping: K 43 (46, 48, 51) sts, place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked later, bind off center st, k across remaining sts. Working over the last set of sts only, continue in pattern and color stripes, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on every 4th row until total length is 13 (13, 13½, 13½) inches, ending at side edge.

Sleeve Shaping: Continuing to dec 1 st at front edge on every 4th row, cast on 4 sts at side edge on next row and every other row once—8 sts in all. Working sleeve edge as on Back and continuing decreases at front edge as indicated, work in pattern and color stripes until 17 (17, 19, 19) sts in all have been decreased. Work even across remaining 34 (37, 37, 40) sts until length is same as Back to shoulder shaping, ending at side edge.

Shoulder Shaping: 1st and 3rd rows: Bind off 11 (12, 12, 13) sts, work across. 2nd and 4th rows: Work across. Bind off re­maining sts. Attach yarn to neck edge of Left Front and work to correspond, reversing shapings.

NECKBAND Sew left shoulder seam. With right side facing, No. 4 needle and M C, starting at right shoulder, pick up and k 38 (38, 42, 42) sts along neck edge of Back; working along left front edge pick up and k 66 (66, 70, 70) sts; place a marker on needle, pick up and k the bound-off center st, place a marker on needle, pick up and k 66 (66, 70, 70) sts along right front edge. There are 171 (171, 183, 183) sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across to within 2 sts before next marker, k 2 tog; slip marker, p 1, slip marker; sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; work in p 1, k 1 ribbing to end of row. 2nd row: * P 1, k 1. Re­peat from * to within 2 sts before next marker; k 2 tog, slip marker, k 1, slip marker, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., work in p 1, k 1 ribbing to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows until neckband measures 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew side and shoulder seams.

FRINGE With M C, cut a 5-inch strand of yarn. Double the strand to form a loop. Insert a crochet hook in one st on lower edge and draw loop through. Draw loose ends through loop and pull up tightly. Make a fringe closely spaced around entire lower edge and sleeve edges. Trim evenly.
