This free pattern originally published in the Botany College Hand Knits, Volume II, in 1958.
MATERIALS: BOTANY SAXATONES, 2, 1-oz. skeins.
KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 pair "Boye" Aluminum Needles, Size 3 - OR SIZE YOU REQUIRE TO KNIT TO GAUGE GIVEN BELOW.
1 pair "Boye" Aluminum Needles, Size 0 for ribbing.
GAUGE: Size 3 Needles - 8 sts = 1 inch
NECKBAND - With size 0 needles, cast on 108 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3 ½ ins.
Dividing row - right side - Work first 18 sts in ribbing and place on holder, * inc. 1 st in next st, k 3; repeat from * 17 times; 90 sts; slip last 18 sts of ribbing on holder.
Hood - With size 3 needles, work in stockinette st - p 1 row, k 1 row - on these 90 sts until 8 ½ ins. above ribbing, end with p row.
Top Shaping - Row 1 - K 59, slip, k and pass, turn.
Row 2 - Slip 1, p 28, p 2 tog., turn.
Row 3 - Slip 1, k 28, slip, k and pass, turn.
Repeat last 2 rows until there are only 30 sts on needle, end with p row. Slip these 30 sts on holder. Break yarn.
Border - With right side facing you and size 0 needles, take up and work 18 sts of ribbing, pick up and k 40 sts on right side of Hood, take up and k 30 sts of center, pick up and k 40 sts on left side of Hood, take up and work 18 sts of ribbing; 146 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 in. Bind off loosely in ribbing.
FINISHING - Beg. at lower edge of right front, from right side, work 8 sc, * ch 3 for buttonloop, skip 3 rows, work 4 sc; repeat from * twice, ch 3, skip 3 rows, 1 slip st at neck edge. Fasten off. Work 1 row sc on left front edge. Sew 4 buttons on left side opposite buttonholes. Block.
