MATERIALS: BEAR BRAND or FLEISHER'S EVER-MATCH ANGEL FLEECE or BOTANY NO-DYE-LOT FLEECY-DOWN, 1 oz. skeins; Color A, 2 skeins; Color B, 1 skein, or BEAR BRAND or FLEISHER'S "SHETLAND AND WOOL", or BOTANY SCOTTIE, 2 oz. skeins; Color A, 1 skein; Color B, 1 skein.
KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 pair "Boye" Needles, Size 7—or size you require to knit to gauge given below. 1 pair "Boye" Needles, Size 4. "Boye" Hook, Size E (2).
GAUGE: Size 7 Needles—Stockinette St—5 sts = 1 inch; 7 rows = 1 inch
Pattern—11 sts = 2 inches; 6 rows = 1 inch
With size 4 needles and A, cast on 85 sts for facing of front hem. Work stockinette st—p 1 row, k 1 row—for 7 rows, end with p row.
Openwork row—right side—K 1, * yo, k 2 tog.; repeat from * to end.
With size 7 needles, p 1 row.
PATTERN—Row 1—With A, k 2, * with B, k 1; with A, k 3; repeat from *, end last repeat k 2 A.
Note: To prevent a hole when changing colors, always bring color to be used under last color used.
Row 2—P 1 A, * p 1 B, p 1 A; repeat from * to end.
Row 3—K 4 A, * k 1 B, k 3 A; repeat from *, end last repeat k 4 A.
Carry color not in use loosely along edge. Continue to follow pattern as on chart until 29 rows above openwork row, end with a p row with A. With A, bind off 29 sts at beg. of next row, k 27 sts, bind off 29 sts. Break yarn and join in last st on needle. Follow pat. as on chart for back of cap for 17 rows above bind-off row, end with a p row. Dec. 1 st each side of next row and repeat decs, every 2nd row 5 times more, following chart; 15 sts. Bind off with A as to p. Block.
Turn back facing along openwork row and hem to wrong side. Sew seams joining side edges of back part to bound-off sts of front part, sewing 1 st to every 2 rows.
TIE STRINGS AND CROCHET EDGE—With A, make ch. 14 ins. long. Beg. at openwork row of front hem on left side of cap, work 1 row sc around neck edge; ch 16½ ins. Fasten off. Join A in first sc on left side of neck edge. Work 1 sc in each st of ch, working in back loop only, 3 sc in last st at end, 1 sc in each st on other side of ch, 1 sc in each sc on neck edge and each st on right ch, 3 sc at end, 1 sc in each st on other side of ch. Join. Fasten off.
