Size 5—7 years

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted Red
½-ounce white
25 yards of blue
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 3 Single Pointed
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 13 sts to 2 inches.

NOTE: Use blue yarn for Snow Man's scarf and hat. White yarn for body part of snow man. Embroider face, buttons and arms with blue yarn.

   CUFF: Using the background color, cast on 38 sts and work in tight ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Tie in white yarn. Next row: Working in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) start the pattern on the first 19 sts following chart. The 19 sts of the inside of mitten are made with the background color. After 6 rows start the thumb gusset as follows: Pattern across 19 sts, increase 1 st in next st, k 1, increase 1 st in next st, knit 16 sts. Next row: With background color, purl 21 sts, pattern across last 19 sts. 2nd inc: Pattern across 19 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 3, inc. 1 st in next st, knit 16 sts. Continue increasing in the same manner, keeping pattern on the first 19 sts and having 2 more sts between each increase on every other row until there are 7 sts between increases; ending with a purl row.

   Thumb Separation: Work pattern across 19 sts and place onto a st holder, knit 11 sts and leave on needle; place remaining 16 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Working in stockinette st on the 11 sts of the thumb, cast on 1 st at each side (13 sts). Work until the piece measures 2 inches from cast on sts. Next knit row: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 12 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw thru remaining sts and fasten tightly on wrong side of work. Sew up thumb.

   Hand: Place the 19 sts off first st holder onto the needle, tie yarn in and pick up and knit 3 sts at base of thumb, place remaining sts off 2nd st holder onto left hand needle, knit across with background color. Work even until 36 rows have been completed. Break off white yarn. Finish mitten in background color. 1st dec: * K 2, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. 2nd dec: * k 1, k 2 tog, repeat from * across row. Purl next row. Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn. Finish as tip of thumb.

   LEFT MITTEN: Cuff: Work as the right one. When time to start the pattern, (follow pattern from left to right) work first 19 sts in background color, then work the remaining 19 sts in pattern. To start the thumb increases: knit 16 sts, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st; pattern last 19 sts. Finish remainder of mitten to correspond to the right one.
