INFANT SIZE

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) for shoes and mittens.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
1 yd. ribbon for mittens.
2 buttons for shoes.

Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

MITTENS No. 5061-A

Starting at wrist, cast on 42 sts and k 16 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row (50 sts). On next 2 rows, k across to within last 7 sts, turn. Work in garter st (k each row) over the center 36 sts until piece measures 2¾ inches.

TO SHAPE TOP … 1st row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 12, k 2 tog., k 1, turn. 2nd row: K 1, k 2, tog., k 10, k 2 tog., k 1, turn. 3rd row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 8, k 2 tog., k 1. 4th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 6, k 2 tog., k 1. 5th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 4, k 2 tog., k 1. 6th row: K 1, k 2 tog., k 2, k 2 tog., k 1. Bind off. Work over next 18 sts to correspond.

THUMB … Attach yarn to 7 end sts and k 12 rows. 13th row: K 2 tog., k 3, k 2 tog. 14th row: K 2 tog., k 1, k 2 tog. Bind off. Work other 7 sts to correspond.

CUFF … Pick up 40 sts across wrist edge and work ½ inch in ribbing of k 2, p 2. Then work as follows: 1st row: Inc. in 1st 2 sts, * p 2, inc. in next 2 sts. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2. 2nd row: * K 2, p 4. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: Inc. in 1st st, * k 2, inc. in next st, p 2, inc. in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2. 4th row: * K 2, p 6. Repeat from * across. Continue increasing thus on each k row, always having 2 more sts between increases, until there are 8 sts in each stockinette section. Work straight until cuff measures 1½ inches. K 3 rows and bind off.

Sew up side and thumb seams with neat over-and-over stitches on wrong side. Run ribbon through center of ribbing at wrist.

SHOES No. 5061-B

Starting at sole, cast on 8 sts and work in garter st for 3 inches. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 4 sts remain (toe). Bind off.

UPPER … Starting at top, cast on 8 sts and work in garter st for 1¼ inches. Dec. 1 st at end of next 2 rows and bind off. Lay this piece aside. Cast on 18 sts, pick up 12 sts across one long side of first piece, 8 sts across toe edge and 12 sts across other long side; cast on 18 sts (68 sts). Work 1 inch straight in garter st. Bind off. Sew up back seam. Place upper against sole and sew together neatly with over-and-over stitches.

STRAP … Cast on 50 sts and k 4 rows. Next row: Make a buttonhole 4 sts in from edge—to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; on next row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off. K 4 rows and bind off. Sew center of strap to center back seam.

TONGUE … Cast on 10 sts and work 1 inch in ribbing of p 2, k 2. Then work as follows: 1st row: * P 2, inc. in next 2 sts. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2. 2nd row: * K 2, p 4. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. 3rd row: * P 2, inc. in next st, k 2, inc. in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2. 4th row: * K 2, p 6. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. Continue increasing thus on each k row, always having 2 sts more between increases, until there are 8 sts in each stockinette section. Work straight until piece measures 2½ inches. K 4 rows and bind off.

Sew cast-on edge of tongue to top edge of upper; then bring tongue over strap and fasten at center front with a snap fastener.
