This free pattern originally published in the Botany College Hand Knits, Volume II, in 1958.

Size 8 ½ to 10 ½.

MATERIALS: BOTANY SAXATONES, 5-1 oz. skeins.
BUCILLA NYLON "HEEL 'n TOE" YARN, 1 card.
KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 set "Boye" Aluminum Sock Needles, Size 1 -OR SIZE YOU REQUIRE TO KNIT TO GAUGE GIVEN BELOW.

GAUGE: 13 rounds = 1 inch

CUFF - Cast on 84 sts loosely; divide on 3 needles. Join, work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 ½ ins.

Leg - Round 1 - K 2, * p 2, k 4; repeat from * around, end p 2, k 2. Place marker before next st for end of round. Carry up marker.

Repeat round 1 for pat. Work until 4½ ins. from ribbing, end at marker.

* Dec. round - K 2 tog., work pat. to within 2 sts of end of round, slip, k and pass. Work 8 rounds even. Repeat from * until there are 9 dec. rounds, purling 2 tog. on each side of marker on p ribs; 66 sts. Continue pat. until 12 ins. from ribbing, working to within 17 sts of marker on last round. Slip last 17 sts and first 17 sts of round to 1 needle for heel and remaining 32 sts to 2 needles for instep. K across heel needle, decreasing 2 sts evenly spaced across, turn; 32 heel sts. Join "Heel 'n Toe" Yarn. Work heel with both strands.

HEEL - Row 1 - wrong side - Slip first st as to p, p to end.

Row 2 - * Holding both strands at back of work, slip 1 as to p, k 1; repeat from * to end. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 30 rows on heel, end with row 2.

Turn heel as follows: Wrong side - Slip 1, p 18, p 2 tog., p 1, turn. Slip 1, k 7, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn. Slip 1, p 8, p 2 tog., p 1, turn. Slip 1, k 9, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn. Slip 1, P 10, p 2 tog., p 1, turn. Continue to work toward sides of heel, having 1 st more before dec. on each row, until 20 sts remain. Fasten off "Heel 'n Toe" Yarn.

GUSSETS AND FOOT - With same (heel) needle, pick up and k 16 sts on side edge of heel; continue pat. on 32 instep sts and work to 1 needle; with free needle, pick up and k 16 sts on other side of heel, k 10 heel sts to same needle. Mark for end of round and center of sole.

There will be 26 sts on each of first and 3rd needles, 32 sts on 2nd or instep needle. Work 1 round, containing pat. across instep sts.

Next round - K to within 3 sts of end of first needle, k 2 tog., k 1; work across instep needle, on 3rd needle, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end. Repeat last 2 rounds 9 times; 64 sts. Continuing pat. on instep sts, work even until foot measures 1¾ ins. less than desired length from tip of heel, allowing these 1¾ ins. for toe.

There will be 16 sts on each of first and 3rd needles, 32 sts on instep needle. Join "Heel 'n Toe" Yarn and work toe with both strands.

TOE - Beg. at center of sole, k to within 3 sts of end of first needle, k 2 tog., k 1; on 2nd needle, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k 2 tog., k 1; on 3rd needle, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end. K 1 round even. Repeat last 2 rounds until 16 sts remain. K 4 sts of first needle and slip to 3rd needle. Weave sole and instep sts tog. Steam.
