Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED
2 (3, 3) ounces Lt. Gray or color of your choice
1 ounce Lt. Pink or color of your choice for small pompons
2 ounces if large pompons are desired
1 set double pointed knitting needles No. 6
Gauge: 5 sts — 1 inch
Directions are given for narrow size. Medium and wide sizes are given in parentheses.
Starting at center back and using 2 needles only, with Gray cast on 30 (36, 42) stitches (sts).
1st Row. Knit (K) across row.
2nd Row. Purl (P) across row.
3rd and 4th Rows. K across each row.
5th Row. P across row.
6th Row. K across row. Repeat the last 6 rows 5 more times. Cast on 3 sts at end of last row for instep. Using 4 needles and working in rounds K 9 (11, 12) sts, with 2nd needle K 18 (20, 24) sts, with 3rd needles K 6 (8, 9) sts, cast on 3 sts on same needle. Working in rounds marking beginning of each round, K 2 rounds even.
Next 3 Rounds. P each round.
Next 3 Rounds. K each round.
Next 3 Rounds. P each round. Repeat last 6 rounds twice. K 3 rounds.
Next Round. Decrease 2 sts evenly spaced on medium size only, on other sizes omit this round.
Next Round. Decrease for Toe: Keeping pattern straight, 1st needle: work to within 3 sts of end of needle, work 2 together (tog), work 1. 2nd needle: Work 1 st, work 2 tog, work to within last 3 sts of same needle, work 2 tog, work 1. 3rd needle: Work 1, work 2 tog, work to end of needle. Work 1 round even. Repeat the last 2 rounds until 16 (16, 20) sts remain.
Place 1st 8 (8, 10) sts on 1 needle and remainder on 2nd needle, cut yarn leaving a length. Thread into blunt needle and weave toe together as follows: * pass needle through 1st st of front needle as if knitting and slip st off needle, pass through 2nd st as if purling and leave st on needle, pass through 1st st of back needle as if purling and slip st off needle, pass through 2nd st of back needle as if knitting and leave st on needle, repeat from * until all sts are worked off, fasten yarn securely.
Sew back seam.
Small Pompon: Wind Pink over a 2½ inch cardboard 150 times, tie one end and trim into shape.
Large Pompon: Wind Pink over a 3 inch cardboard 225 times, tie one end and trim into shape.
Sew to front of moccasin as illustrated.
Run elastic thread around top of moccasin if desired.
Work another moccasin in same manner.
