BACK - With size 6 needles and A, cast on 17 (19-21) sts; with B, cast on 12 sts; with another skein of A, cast on 17 (19-21) sts; with another skein of B, cast on 12 sts; with another skein of A, cast on 17 (19-21) sts; 75 (81-87) sts.
NOTE: Always bring color to be used under last color used to prevent a hole.
Row 1 - wrong side-P 17 (19-21) A, * p 12 B, 17 (19-21) A; repeat from * once.
Row 2 - K 17 (19-21) A; * k 12 B, 17 (19-21) A; repeat from * once. Repeat rows 1 and 2, twice for facing.
Turning Ridge - wrong side - K, inserting needle in back of sts using matching colors.
Plaid Pattern - Row 1 - right side-With size 8 needles, k 17 (19-21) A, * k 12 B, 17 (19-21) A; repeat from * once.
Row 2 - P 17 (19-21) A, * p 12 B; 17 (19-21) A; repeat from * once.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 once.
With C, k 1 row, p 1 row. Carry A and B up along edge and on wrong side at center.
Rows 7 and 8 - Repeat rows 1 and 2. With C, k 1 row, p 1 row. Break C. Repeat rows 1 and 2 five times.
With C, k 1 row, p 1 row.
Rows 23 and 24 - Repeat rows 1 and 2. With C, k 1 row, p 1 row. Break C. Repeat row 1 and 2 twice. Break A and B.
These 30 rows complete first group of squares.
Row 31 - K 17 (19-21) B, * k 12 C, 17 (19-21) B; repeat from * once.
Row 32 - P 17 (19-21) B, * p 12 C, 17 (19-21) B; repeat from * once. Repeat rows 31 and 32 twice. With D, k 1 row, p 1 row.
Rows 39 and 40 - Repeat rows 31 and 32.
With D, k 1 row, p 1 row. Break D. Repeat rows 31 and 32 three times. These 18 rows complete 2nd group of squares. These 48 rows form one repeat of pat. Repeat the 30 rows of first group and 13 (11-9) rows of 2nd group, end with pat. row 43 (41-39), a k row, about 14 ¼ (14-13 ¾) ins. above turning ridge. Mark for underarm.
Armholes - With B (D-B) bind off 4 (5-6) sts, work to within 4 (5-6) sts of end with care to carry out pat., with B (D-B) bind off last 4 (5-6) sts; 67 (71-75) sts. Break yarn at edges. Work even in pat. until about 6 ¾ (7-7 ¼) ins. above marker, with care to carry out pat. joining yarn as needed, end with pat. row 39. Break D.
Turning Ridge - wrong side - With size 6 needles, k, inserting needle in back of sts using matching colors.
Next row - K 13 (14-15) B, 12 C, 17 (19-21) B, 12 C, 13 (14-15) B.
Next row - P 13 (14-15) B, 12 C, 17 (19-21) B, 12 C, 13 (14-15) B.
Repeat last 2 rows twice for neck facing. Bind off with matching colors.
FRONT - Work same as back.
SLEEVES - With size 6 needles and A, cast on 15 (17-19) sts; with B, cast on 12 sts; with another strand of A, cast on 15 (17-19) sts; 42 (46-50) sts.
Row 1 - P 15 (17-19) A, 12B, 15 (17-19) A.
Row 2 - K 15 (17-19) A, 12B, 15 (17-19) A.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice for facing. Work turning ridge as on back.
Plaid Pattern - Row 1 - right side - With size 8 needles, k 15 (17-19) A, 12 B, 15 (17-19) A.
Row 2-P 15 (17-19) A, 12 B, 15 (17-19) A.
Continue pat. as on back, increasing 1 st each side of 12th row increasing as to purl. Repeat incs. every 12th row 3 times, working increased sts in same color as square at each side; 50 (54-58) sts. This completes first 48 rows of pat. Break B in middle of work but do not break B at end of last row.
Next row - K 2 B, 17 (19-21) A, 12 B, 17 (19-21) A, join another skein B and k 2 B. Continue pat. increasing 1 st each side every 10th row as before 3 times; 56 (60-64) sts. This completes 30 rows of this group of squares.
Next row - K 5 C, 17 (19-21) B, 12 C, 17 (19-21) B, 5 C. Work next 8 rows of pat. Inc. 1 st each side of next row; 58 (62-66) sts. Work 8 rows even. Sleeve should measure about 14 ¾ ins. above turning ridge. Bind off.
VERTICAL CROCHET STRIPES - First Stripe - Insert hook from right side between 3rd and 4th st from right edge of back, just above turning ridge at lower edge and draw C through to right side, * insert hook between same sts above next row, draw yarn through from wrong side and through loop on hook; repeat from * to bound-off sts at armhole. Fasten off by drawing through to wrong side below bound-off sts. Skip next 2 sts and work 2nd stripe with C, same as first stripe. Skip next 7 (9-11) sts and work 3rd stripe with C working to turning ridge of neck facing. Skip 2 sts and work 4th stripe same as 3rd stripe. Skip 8 sts and work 5th stripe with D same as 3rd stripe. Skip 2 sts and work 6th stripe with D. Work 4 stripes with C on next square to correspond to first square, working all stripes to neck ridge; work 2 stripes with D on next square and 4 stripes with C on next square to correspond to first square.
Work stripes on front to correspond to back.
Insert hook between first and 2nd sts from right edge of sleeve just above turning ridge and work with C for first stripe to top of sleeve. Skip 2 sts and work 2nd stripe with C. Continue to work stripes to correspond to back, ending last stripe between 2nd and last st from left edge.
FINISHING - Sew underarm seams matching pats. Sew sleeve seams to within ¾ (1-1¼) ins. of top, matching pats. Turn back facings and hem on wrong side leaving an opening at side on lower edge for inserting elastic. Sew shoulder seams sewing through sts of turning ridge for 3 ½ (4-4½) ins. at each side. Sew bound-off edge of top of sleeve to armhole edge, sew side edges left free to bound-off sts of underarm. Block.
Insert ½ in. elastic through hem on lower edge and hold in to desired measurement.
