Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" BULKY YARN
12 (14, 16) ozs. White.
6 (8, 10) ozs. Pearl Gray or colors of your choice
- or -
"GEM" HAT and BAG YARN, Article 144
7 (8, 9) Skeins White.
3 (4, 4) Skeins Gray or colors of your choice.
1 pr. plastic knitting needles No. 10 ½

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch.

Directions are given for size 12. Sizes 14 and 16 are given in parentheses.

BACK: With White cast on 69 (73, 77) sts, K 1 row.

2nd Row: K across row.

3rd Row: P across row, drop White.

4th Row: With Gray, * sl 1 as if to purl having yarn in back of work, K 1, repeat from * across row ending with sl 1.

5th Row: * Sl 1 as if to purl having yarn in front of work, yarn in back of work K 1, repeat from * across row ending with sl 1, drop Gray.

6th Row: With White K across row.

7th Row: P across row, drop White.

8th Row: With Gray, * K 1, sl 1 as if to purl having yarn in back of work, repeat from * across row ending with K 1.

9th Row: * Yarn in back of work K 1, sl 1 as if to purl having yarn in front of work, repeat from * across row ending with K 1, drop Gray, pick up White. Repeat 2nd through 9th rows for pattern until back measures 7 (7 ½, 8) inches.

Next 2 Rows: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row. Keeping pattern even decrease 1 st at beginning of every row until 55 (59, 63) sts remain. Work even in pattern until armholes measure 7 ½ (8, 8 ½) inches.

SHOULDERS: Bind off 5 (5, 5) sts at beginning of each of the next 6 rows, then bind off 4 (5, 6) sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 17 (19, 21) sts. (All the sl sts are worked in same manner for remainder of bolero, having yarn in back of work on right side and front of work on wrong side.)

LEFT FRONT: With White cast on 40 (42, 44) sts and K 1 row.

2nd Row: K across row.

3rd Row: K 2 for front border, P to end of row, drop White.

4th Row: With Gray, * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to within 2 sts, drop Gray, using another ball of White, K last 2 sts for front border.

5th Row: K 2, drop White, pick up Gray (when changing color always pick up new color from underneath dropped color, thus twisting yarn to avoid a hole), * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * to end of row, drop Gray.

6th Row: With White K across row.

7th Row: Same as 3rd row.

8th Row: With Gray, * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * to within last 2 sts, drop Gray, with White K 2.

9th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat from 2nd through 9th row for pattern until front measures same as back to underarm, ending at armhole edge.

ARMHOLE: Bind off 4 (4, 4) sts at beginning of next row, then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 30 (32, 34) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 6 (6, 6 ¼) inches from 1st decreasing point ending at front edge.

Next Row: Bind off 5 (5, 5) sts at neck edge (discontinue front border). Bind off 2 (2, 2) sts at neck edge every other row twice, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row until 19 (20, 21) sts remain. When armhole measures same as back armhole, shape shoulder same as back shoulder.

RIGHT FRONT: With White cast on 40 (42, 44) sts and K 1 row.

2nd Row: K across row.

3rd Row: P to within 2 sts, K last 2 sts for front edge.

4th Row: K 2 sts for front edge, drop White, with Gray * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * across row.

5th Row: * Sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to within last 2 sts, drop Gray, with White K 2.

6th Row: With White K across row.

7th Row: Same as 3rd row.

8th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * across row.

9th Row: * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * to within last sts, with White K 2.

Repeat from 2nd through 9th rows for pattern and finish same as Left Front reversing the shaping.

SLEEVES: With White cast on 51 (53, 55) sts, P 1 row, drop White.

2nd Row: Attach Gray and work same as 4th row of back. Work even in pattern same as for back until sleeve measures 3 ½ inches from beginning.

SHAPE SLEEVE: Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of the next 2 rows.

Next 2 Rows: Work even in pattern.

Next Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of row. Keeping pattern even, repeat last 3 rows until 19 (21, 23) sts remain.

Next Row: Work even in pattern.

Next Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of row. Repeat last 2 rows once. Work 1 row even. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off sts at beginning of next 2 rows, bind off remaining sts.

CUFFS FOR SLEEVES: With White cast on 51 (53, 55) sts and K 1 row.

2nd Row: K across row.

3rd Row: K 2, P to within last 2 sts, K last 2 sts.

4th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to within last 3 sts, sl 1, drop Gray, with another strand of White K last 2 sts.

5th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * sl 1, K 1, repeat from * to within last 3 sts, sl 1, drop Gray, with White K last 2 sts.

6th Row: K across row.

7th Row: Same as 3rd row.

8th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * to within last 3 sts, K 1, drop Gray, with White K 2.

9th Row: K 2, drop White, with Gray * K 1, sl 1, repeat from * to within last 3 sts, K 1, drop Gray, with White K 2.

Repeat from 2nd to 7th rows once, bind off.

COLLAR: With White cast on 55 (57, 59) sts and work 9 rows same as for cuffs. Repeat from 2nd to 9th rows once, then repeat 2nd and 3rd rows once, bind off.

Block each section. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in position. Starting at center st of sleeve, sew a cuff around each sleeve edge as illustrated. Sew collar in position.
