MATERIAL:
5 (6-7-8) skeins Bulky Yarn (2 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles No. 11 or any size needles which will give stitch gauge given below
5 (5-6-6) buttons
GAUGE: 5 sts. = 2 inch.
PATTERN:
1st row: *K1, P1 repeat from * across row end P1.
2nd row: Work as first row.
3rd row: *P1, K1 repeat from * across row end K1.
4th row: Work as 3rd row.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.
BACK:
With No. 11 needles cast on 44 (46-48-52) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 1 inch. Change to pattern. With 44 (46-48-52) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 13 (13½-14-15) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Shape armhole: (all sizes) Work in ribbing K1, P1 over first 8 sts., work in pattern to last 8 sts., work in ribbing K1, P1 for last 8 sts. Repeat this row 3 times more. Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows (all sizes). Keep the 6 sts. on each end of needle in ribbing as established for border and decr. 1 st. inside the border sts. on each end every other row 3 (3-3-3) times more. (32 (34-36-40) sts. are left.) Work even for 7 (7½-8-8½) inch. from first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 rows 5 (5-6-6) sts. Rem. 12 (14-12-16) sts. bind off for neck.
LEFT FRONT:
With No. 11 needles cast on 24 (26-28-30) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 1 inch. keeping the 4 center front sts. in K1, P1 ribbing for front border throughout the entire front. Change to pattern. With 24 (26-28-30) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Shape armhole: (all sizes) Work in ribbing K1, P1 over first 8 sts. at armhole edge, work in pattern to last 4 sts., K1, P1 for front border. Repeat this row 3 times more. Bind off 2 sts. at armhole edge. Decr. 1 st. at armhole edge behind the 6 border sts. every other row 4 times (all sizes). At the same time decr. 1 st. for V neck at center edge, inside the 4 border sts. every 3rd row until 14 (14-16-16) sts. incl. the 4 front border sts. are left. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 5 (5-6-6) sts. twice. Rem. 4 border sts, cont. to work in ribbing for 2 (2¼-2½-2½) inch. Bind off.
RIGHT FRONT:
Work as Left Front reversing all shapings. Work 5 (5-6-6) buttonholes evenly spaced apart in front border, starting first buttonhole after 1 inch and placing last one 2 rows below V neck shaping. (To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, y.o., K2 tog. On next row P the y.o. to form buttonhole.)
FINISHING:
Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew neckband together and sew to back of neck. Sew buttons in place and block to size.
