MATERIALS
BERNAT Nylo Germantown (2 oz. skeins) — 7 each Slate and White, 5 Black
1 pair plastic knitting needles No. 10 ½ OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
1 steel crochet hook No. 0
GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch; 6 rows = 1 inch
FIRST STRIP: Using White, cast on 26 sts. * Row 1: K in back loop of first st, K to last st, bring yarn to front and sl last st as if to P. Row 2: K in back loop of first st, P to last st, sl last st as if to P. Repeat these 2 rows 30 times more. Break off White. Join Slate and repeat Rows 1 and 2 thirty-two times. Break off Slate. Join White. Repeat from * until there are 5 Slate squares and 6 White squares. Bind off. Make 3 more strips in same manner.
SECOND STRIP: Using Slate, cast on 26 sts. Work in same manner as first strip, working Slate for 32 rows and Black for 32 rows alternately, until there are 5 Black squares and 6 Slate squares. Bind off. Make 2 more strips in same manner.
FINISHING: Sew strips tog, alternating first and second strips and having first strip at each outer edge. Work 1 row s c in matching color around entire afghan, working 3 s c in each corner. Block. FRINGE: Cut strands of Black and White yarn 9 inches long. Using 2 strands, make a fringe in each s c, using White on White squares and Black on Slate squares.
