Cap and Sacque Set Pattern #5058

There are some slight differences between versions. Following are both patterns in full.

 

Spool Cotton #138, Woolies for Infants

INFANT SIZE

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) for entire set.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 0 (2 mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
A set of double-pointed steel needles No. 13, for cap.
½ oz. fine Angora of contrasting color, for trimming.
1 yd. ribbon ⅜ inch wide, for sacque; and 1 yd ribbon ⅞ inch wide, for cap.

Gauge: 10 sts make 1 inch; 19 rows make 1 inch.

SACQUE No. 5058-A

RIGHT FRONT … Starting at bottom, cast on 42 sts on straight needles and work 5½ inches in garter st (k each row). Now cast on 50 sts at end of needle, for sleeve, and continue over these 92 sts until piece measures 7 inches in all, ending at center front edge. On each of next 10 rows dec. 2 sts (1 st in from center front edge) for neck shaping (72 sts). Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches from cast-on sts of sleeve, ending at neck edge. Place all sts on stitch holder and lay aside.

LEFT FRONT … Work to correspond with Right Front, ending at neck edge. Do not bind off, but continue as follows:

BACK … Cast on 40 sts for back of neck. Beginning at neck edge, work across sts of Right Front. Work over these 184 sts until piece measures 6½ inches from sts cast on for sleeves (on Fronts). Bind off 50 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Work over remaining 84 sts for 5½ inches. Bind off loosely.

NECK BAND … With right side of work toward you, pick up 20 sts along neck edge of Right Front, 62 sts along back of neck and 20 sts along Left Front. K across these 102 sts. Next row: K 1, * O twice, k 1. Repeat from * across. Bind off, allowing the two O's of previous row to drop off needle.

Sew up side and sleeve seams. Holding right side toward you, with Angora work a row of s c all around edges, and around bottom of sleeves, keeping work flat. Run narrow ribbon under and over spaces along neck band, and tie.

EMBROIDERY … Use double strand of Angora. Embroider a row of diamonds as in illustration, along lower edge of both Fronts and Back.

CAP No. 5058-B

Starting at tip of crown, cast on 2 sts on each of 3 double-pointed needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. 1st rnd: K around. 2nd rnd: P around. 3rd rnd: K around, increasing in each st (12 sts). 4th rnd: P around. 5th rnd: K around, increasing 1 st at both ends of each needle (6 sts on each needle). Repeat 4th and 5th rnds alternately until there are 48 sts on each needle. On next rnd bind off 48 sts of one needle, for back of neck. Continue in garter st, working rows (k each row) instead of rnds, until piece measures 6¼ inches from tip of crown, measuring along side of cap. Bind off. Turn back 1¼ inches at front edge, and tack in place. With right side toward you, work a row of Angora s c along edges, keeping work flat and easing in back of neck for close fit. With double strand of Angora embroider 5 diamonds, along center of turn-back. Cut wider ribbon in half and sew to ends of turn-back.

Infant Size

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY WOOL, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) for set.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
4 double-pointed steel needles No. 10, for cap.
½ oz. fine Angora of contrasting color, for trimming.
1 yd. ribbon ⅜ inch wide, for sacque; and 1 yd. ribbon ⅞ inch wide, for cap.

GAUGE: 7½ sts make 1 inch; 14 rows make 1 inch.

SACQUE

RIGHT FRONT … Starting at bottom, cast on 34 sts on straight needles and work 5½ inches in garter st (k each row). Now cast on 41 sts at end of needle, for sleeve, and continue over these 75 sts until piece measures 7 inches in all, ending at center front edge. On each of next 7 rows dec. 2 sts by knitting 3 sts together (1 st in from center front edge) for neck shaping (61 sts). Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches from cast-on sts of sleeve, ending at neck edge. Place all sts on stitch holder and lay aside.

LEFT FRONT … Work to correspond with Right Front, ending at neck edge. Do not bind off, but continue:

BACK … Cast on 28 sts for back of neck. Beginning at neck edge, work across sts of Right Front. Work over these 150 sts until piece measures 6½ inches from sts cast on for sleeves (on Fronts). Bind off 41 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Work over remaining 68 sts for 5½ inches. Bind off loosely.

NECK BAND … With right side of work toward you, pick up 76 sts around neckline and k across. Next row: K 1, * O twice, k 1. Repeat from * across. Bind off, allowing the two O's of previous row to drop off needle.

Sew up side and sleeve seams. Holding right side toward you, with Angora work a row of s c all around edges, and around bottom of sleeves, keeping work flat. Run narrow ribbon under and over spaces along neck band, and tie.

Repeat 4th and 5th rnds alternately until there are 38 sts on each needle. On next rnd bind off 38 sts of one needle, for back of neck. Continue in garter st, working rows (k each row) instead of rnds, until piece measures 6¼ inches from tip of crown, measuring along side of cap. Bind off. Turn back 1¼ inches at front edge, and tack in place. With right side toward you, work a row of Angora s c along edges, keeping work flat and easing in back of neck for close fit. With double strand of Angora embroider 5 diamonds along center of turn-back. Cut wider ribbon in half and sew to ends of turn-back.
