Peter Piper Mittens and Bootees Set Pattern #5059

There are some slight differences between versions. Following are both patterns in full.

 

Spool Cotton #138, Woolies for Infants

INFANT SIZE

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) of any color.
Double-pointed bone knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 14 rows make 1 inch.

MITTENS No. 5059-A

PALM … Starting at wrist, cast on 45 sts. 1st row: K 1, p 1 alternately across, ending with k 1. Repeat 1st row for 2¾ inches (moss st). Next row: Dec. 8 sts (2 at a time) evenly apart. Following row: Work in pattern. Repeat last 2 rows alternately until 13 sts remain. Break off, leaving long strand; run this strand through remaining sts, pull tight and fasten.

CUFF … Pick up 70 sts at wrist edge and work 2 rows moss st. Next row: K 1, * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (70 sts). Work 2 more rows of moss st; then work as follows: 1st row: K 1, k 2 tog. 3 times, * (O, k 1) 5 times, O; k 2 tog. 6 times. Repeat from * across, ending with O, k 2 tog. 3 times, k 1. 2nd and 4th rows: P across. 3rd row: K across. Repeat last 4 rows until cuff measures 3 inches. Work 2 rows of moss st. Bind off. Sew up side seam. With a crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn, make a chain to run through eyelets at wrist, and tie.

TASSELS (Make 2) … Cut a cardboard 2 x 4 inches. Place a 12-inch strand across length of cardboard; wind yarn around width 18 times. Break off. Pick up both ends of the 12-inch yarn and tie. Slip tassel off and wind 1 strand several times around near top; tie securely. Trim ends; sew tassel to each end of chain.

BOOTEES No. 5059-B

Starting at top, cast on 70 sts and work in moss st for 2 rows. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 1, k 2 tog. 3 times; * (O, k 1) 5 times, O, k 2 tog. 6 times. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog. 3 times, k 1. 2nd and 4th rows: P across. 3rd row: K across. Repeat last 4 rows until piece measures 3 inches. Work 4 rows moss st. Next row: K 1, * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. Work 2 more rows moss st, decreasing last st on 1st row, and 18 sts (2 at a time) on 2nd row (51 sts). On next row work in moss st across 1st 32 sts, turn and work across 13 sts. Work over these 13 sts only in moss st for 1½ inches. Bind off. Attach yarn to 1st st on right side of piece just made and work in moss st across 19 sts, pick up 35 sts around edges of the 13 sts just worked; then work in moss st across 19 sts (73 sts). Work in moss st for 1 inch. Next row: Dec. 1 st, work in moss st across next 32 sts, dec. 1 st, k 1, dec. 1 st, work in moss st across next 32 sts, ending with dec. 1 st. Following row: Work moss st across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately, having 2 sts less between decreases in each dec. row, until 49 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up sole and back seams. Make a cord as for mitten. Run cord through eyelets at ankle; finish with tassels.


Spool Cotton #153, Woolies for Infants

Infant Size

MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY POMPADOUR, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) for set.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
1½ yds. ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

GAUGE: (moss stitch) 7 sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch.

MITTENS

CUFF … Cast on 48 sts and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: (K 2 tog.) twice, * (O, k 1) 4 times; (k 2 tog.) 4 times. Repeat from * across, ending with (O, k 1) 4 times, (k 2 tog.) Twice. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: K across. 4th row: P across. Repeat these 4 rows until cuff measures 3 inches, ending with 4th row of pattern. Next row: K 2 tog., * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (47 sts on needle). Following row: Purl each st and each O across. The last 2 rows form eyelets for ribbon. Next row: Knit, decreasing 12 sts evenly across (35 sts remain). Following row: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last row for 2¼ inches (moss stitch).
   To shape top, work across 17 sts, k 2 tog., work over remaining sts. Work in moss stitch over last 17 sts only, decreasing 1 st at end of each row until 7 sts remain. Bind off. Attach yarn where work was divided and work other half to correspond. Sew side and top edges together. Run ribbon through eyelets, and tie.

BOOTEES

Cast on 48 sts and work as for cuff of mittens until eyelets have been completed (47 sts). Next row: K across, decreasing 8 sts evenly across row (39 sts). Following row: Work in moss stitch across 25 sts, turn and work back across 11 sts in moss st. Work over these 11 sts only for 1½ inches. Bind off (this is toe piece). With right side facing, slip the 14 sts of right-hand needle onto left-hand needle, attach yarn and work in moss stitch over 14 sts; pick up 31 sts evenly around edges of toe piece; work in moss stitch over remaining 14 sts (59 sts on needle). Work in moss stitch for 1 inch. With right side facing, work across 25 sts, p 3 tog., work across next 3 sts, p 3 tog., work across remaining 25 sts. Next row: Work in moss stitch (55 sts). Following row: Work across 23 sts, p 3 tog., work across next 3 sts, p 3 tog., work across remaining 23 sts. Next row: Work in moss stitch (51 sts). Continue thus, decreasing 4 sts every other row until 43 sts remain. Bind off on next row. Sew sole and back in one continuous seam. Run ribbon through eyelets, and tie.
