“Boye” Sock Needles, 1 set Size 4.
GAUGE: 6 sts = 1 inch; 9 rows = 1 inch
LEFT MITTEN—Cuff—With A, cast on 40 sts, divide on 3 needles. Join. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 rounds.
Ribbed Stripe—With B, k 1 round. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 rounds.
Repeat these 4 rounds of ribbed stripe working 1 stripe each of C, A, B and C, increasing 2 sts in last round; 42 sts.
Hand—With A, k 4 rounds even.
First inc. round for thumb gore—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 1, inc. 1 st in next st, k to end of round; 5 sts in thumb gore. K 2 rounds even.
2nd inc. round—Inc. 1 st in first st, k 3, inc. 1 st in next st, k to end of round; 7 sts in thumb gore. K 2 rounds even. Continue to inc. 1 st each side of thumb gore every 3rd round having 2 sts more between incs. after each successive inc. round until there are 15 sts in thumb gore; 54 sts. K 2 rounds even. Slip 15 thumb sts to strand of yarn. Cast on 3 sts, mark for end of round; 42 sts. Place first 10 sts on first needle, next 10 sts on 2nd needle, and remaining 22 sts on 3rd needle for palm. K 10 rounds even.
Next round—K first 20 sts; work k 2, p 2 ribbing on next 22 sts of palm. Repeat last round 5 times.
Dividing round—K 20 sts, leave on needles for back of hand; bind off next 22 sts in ribbing. Fasten off.
Underlap—First Stripe—With C, cast on 22 sts, k 1 row, p 1 row for 4 rows. Break off. Work 3 more stripes, 1 each of B, A and C. Break off.
Joining round—With B, k 20 sts of back of hand, join and k 22 sts of underlap; 42 sts. K 3 more rounds with B, break off B. With A, k 4 rounds. With C, k 4 rounds. Break off C. With A, work even until 6 ins. above cuff, decreasing 2 sts in last round; 40 sts.
First dec. round—* K 2, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 30 sts. K 3 rounds even.
2nd dec. round—* K 1, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around; 20 sts. K 3 rounds even.
3rd dec. round—K 2 tog. 10 times in succession; 10 sts. Break off leaving an end. Draw end tightly through all sts.
Thumb—Slip the 15 thumb sts to 2 needles, with A and free needle pick up and k 3 sts on the cast-on sts; 18 sts. K around until thumb measures 2 ins. above cast-on sts.
First dec. round—* K 1, k 2 tog.; repeat from * around. K 2 rounds even. K 2 tog. 6 times in succession. Finish as for top of mitten.
RIGHT MITTEN—Work same as left mitten until 2 rounds above last inc. round of thumb gore. Slip 15 thumb sts to strand of yarn. Mark last st knitted for end of round. Cast on 3 sts, k to end of round. Slip 3 cast-on sts and next 19 sts to first needle for palm. Slip 10 sts on each of 2nd and 3rd needles for back of hand. Work 9 rounds even.
Next round—Work k 2, p 2 ribbing on first 22 sts of palm, k to end of round. Repeat last round 5 times.
Dividing round—Bind off first 22 sts in ribbing, k to end leaving 20 sts for back of hand on needles. Break off.
Underlap—Work same as for left mitten.
Joining round—With B, k across underlap, join and k across back of hand; 42 sts. K 3 more rounds with B. Finish as for left mitten.
FINISHING—Steam. Sew side edges of underlap to side edges of palm.
