Sizes 9 to 12
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Wool Floss, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) for Sizes 9 and 10; 4 balls for Sizes 11 and 12.
Clark's O.N.T. Double-pointed Plastic Sock Needles, 1 set No. 2 (2 ¾ mm. size).
GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch.
CUFF . . . Cast on 64 sts loosely. Divide sts among 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 3 ½ inches. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st, 2nd and 3rd rnds: K 1, p 1 alternately around. 4th, 5th and 6th rnds: P 1, k 1 alternately around.
The last 6 rnds constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 11 inches in all.
MARKER FOR HEEL . . . Drop working yarn and, with a scrap of yarn of a different color, k across next 32 sts. Transfer the 32 colored stitches back on left hand needles and, with working yarn, k across the colored sts, keeping these 32 sts on one needle to be called 1st needle (Fig. 1). Divide remaining sts evenly on 2nd and 3rd needles. Continue working in pattern as before until piece measures from colored marker 7 inches for Size 9; 8 inches for Size 10; 9 inches for Size 11; 10 inches for Size 12.
To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k across to within 3 sts from end of needle, then k 2 tog, k 1; on 2nd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to end of needle; on 3rd needle, k to within last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. 2nd rnd: K around.
Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately until 24 sts remain on rnd. Weave sts together.
HEEL . . . Pull out colored yarn which holds the heel sts. Pick up sts as shown in Fig. 2 (31 sts on 1st needle and 16 sts on 2nd and 3rd needles). With 4th needle, k across 1st needle, then pick up 1 st (32 sts on 1st needle), k across 2nd and 3rd needles, then shape heel exactly like toe.
