CUFF . . . With Brown and straight pins, cast on 72 sts loosely. Divide sts among 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3 ½ inches, decreasing 8 sts evenly on last rnd (64 sts).

Work back and forth over the heel sts only as follows:
HEEL . . . 1st row: Sl 1, p across. 2nd row: * Sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 2 ¼ inches, ending with a p row (Fig. 3).

With spare needle pick up and k 16 sts along side of heel. Turn. P across 25 sts, keeping them on one needle; with another needle p 9 sts, then pick up and p 16 sts along other side of heel. Turn.
To Shape Instep: Work back and forth over these 50 sts as follows: 1st row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to last 3 sts of 2nd needle, then k 2 tog, k 1. Turn. 2nd row: P across. Turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until 32 sts remain (16 sts on each needle), ending with a p row. Drop heel piece and work over Instep sts in Stripe pattern until piece is same length as sole piece. Then place work on 3 needles again, having 16 sts on 1st and 3rd needles and 32 sts on 2nd needle. Continue in Stripe pattern as before until piece measures 2 ¼ inches less than length desired. Break off White and work 1 rnd of Brown.
