No. 605 – Mens Rib and Cable Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Sport or Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 2 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 7½ sts to an inch

STARTING AT THE CUFF: Cast on 68 sts and work in rib­bing of k 2, p 2 for 3½ inches. Decrease 2 sts on last row of ribbing, (56 sts). Now work in the pattern as follows: Row 1: k 2, * p 2, k 4, repeat from * across row, ending with p 2, k 2. Row 2: P 2, * k 2, p 4, repeat from * across row, ending with p 2, k 2. Rows 3-4-5-6: Repeat row 1 and 2. Row 7: K 2, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2, slip next 2 sts onto a dble pt needle and hold in back of work, knit next 2 sts, knit 2 sts off the dble pt needle (cable twist), p 2, k 4, – 4 times; p 2, make a cable twist as before, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 4, p 2. Row 8: Repeat row 2. Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern. Work until the piece measures 11 inches or length needed.

HEEL: Knit 17 sts and leave on the needle; place the next 32 sts of instep onto a st holder and the remaining 17 sts onto a 2nd st holder. On the 17 sts, work in stockinette stitch, always slipping the first st on a purl row, work 26 rows, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
K 3, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
K 4, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
K 5, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;
K 6, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 7, turn;
K 7, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 8, turn;
K 8, slip 1, k 1, psso, k 1, (10 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and purl 14 sts along side of heel, work the 32 sts off st holder, place these sts from needle onto a free st holder, knit 17 sts from st holder. Work on these 17 sts in stockinette st for 27 rows always slipping the first st on a knit row, ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL;
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
P 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
P 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
P 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
P 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 7, turn;
P 7, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 8, turn;
P 8, p 2 tog, p 1, (10 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and purl 14 sts along side of heel, place a marker on needle, work the 32 sts of the instep in ribbing as the sts are, no more cables, place a marker on needle, purl the last 24 sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, work across instep sts; slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. Next row: Work back as the sts are keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 64 sts remain on the needle. Drop off marker. Work as the sts are until the piece measures 8 inches for Size 10; 9 inches for Size 11; or 2 inches shorter than length desired.

TOE DECREASES: With the wrong side of the work facing you, purl 16 sts, place a marker; purl 32 sts; place a marker; purl last 16 sts. Next row: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1, slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso; knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 24 sts remain. Bind off. Sew across toe, having decreases at side. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.

 

No. 613 – Men’s Rib and Cable Socks

REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 3-ounces of 3-ply Sport or Sock Yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. No. 2 single pointed.
Two stitch holders.

GAUGE: 7½ sts to an inch

WORK AS GIVEN FOR NO. 605 making the cuff for 2 inches. Then work in the pattern until the piece measures 6 inches in all, or length desired to heel. Starting with HEEL: Complete as given for No. 605.
