1 Pr. Standard No. 2 Needles
SCALE: 9 sts to 1 in.
Jack Frost Fingering Fleece—2 1-oz. Balls Main Color; 1 1-oz. Ball Contrasting Color

NOTE: Colors will be referred to as follows: Main color—M C; Contrasting color—C C. Always be sure to twist yarns once when changing colors, to avoid making a hole. Before starting pattern, wind M C into 2 balls and C C into 3 balls.

With M C cast on 71 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 in. then work in pattern as follows:
Row 1—Knit 1 C C—34 M C—1 C C—34 M C—1 C C.
Row 2 and all even rows purl back with same colors.
Row 3—Knit 2 C C—32 M C—3 C C—32 M C—2 C C.
Row 5—Knit 3 C C—30 M C—5 C C—30 M C—3 C C.
Continue in the above manner, adding 1 more st in color to the C C half diamonds on each end; 2 more sts to the C C center diamond; decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the M C half diamonds, every knit row, until the 2 M C half diamonds have been completed and sts are on the Needle as follows:
Row 33—Knit 17 C C—2 M C—33 C C—2 M C—17 C C.
Row 34—Purl back in same colors.
Row 35—Knit 16 C C—4 M C—31 C C—4 M C—16 C C.
Row 36—Purl back in same colors.
Continue in the above manner, decreasing 1 st in color at each side of the center C C diamond and 1 st on the side of the C C half diamonds, every knit row; increasing 1 st in color on each side of the M C diamonds, until the center C C diamond has been completed and sts are on the Needle as follows:
Row 65—Knit 35 M C—1 C C—35 M C.
Row 66—Purl back in same colors.

HEEL: With M C knit 17. Place remaining 54 st on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 17 heel sts for 26 rows ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:
Row 1—K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.
Row 3—K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.
Row 5—K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.
Continue working in the above manner until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with K 8, K 2 tog., K 1.
Pick up and knit 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and work across the 37 instep sts in pattern as follows:
18 M C—1 C C—18 M C. Place the 61 sts just worked on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the remaining 17 heel sts for 27 rows, ending with a knit row. Turn this half of heel as follows:
Row 1—P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.
Row 3—P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.
Row 5—P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.
Continue working in the above manner until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with P 8, P 2 tog., P 1.
Pick up and purl 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row with same colors (85 sts).

INSTEP SHAPING:
Row 1—With M C knit 22, K 2 tog., K 17, change to C C and knit 3, change to M C and K 17, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 22.
Row 2 and all even rows purl back in same colors.
Row 3—With M C knit 21, K 2 tog., K 16, change to C C and knit 5, change to M C and K 16, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 21.
Row 5—With M C knit 20, K 2 tog., K 15, change to C C and knit 7, change to M C and K 15, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 20.
Continuing decreasing as given above, adding 1 more st in color to the center C C diamond every other row, until 71 sts remain. Work even in pattern until sts are on the Needle as given for row 65. Purl back in same colors, then break off the C C yarn and continue to work even in M C until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length, measuring from back of heel.
Decrease for toe as follows:
Row 1—K 15, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 29, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 15.
Row 2 and all even rows purl.
Row 3—K 14, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 27, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 14.
Row 5—K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 25, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, P S S O, K 13.
Continue decreasing as given above until 23 sts remain.
Weave tip of sock tog. Sew back and sole seam.
Work other sock to correspond.
