BLOUSE
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 102 sts and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until 90 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 108 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11¼ inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 30 sts remain. Bind off.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 50 sts and work as for Back, decreasing 1 st at underarm side every 10th row 3 times. Work straight until piece measures 5¼ inches. Then inc. 1 st at underarm side on next row and every 10th row thereafter until there are 54 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at armhole edge, bind off 10 sts once. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row 5 times (39 sts). To shape neck, dec. 1 st at front edge on next row and every 3rd row thereafter until 24 sts remain. Work straight until armhole measures same as armhole of Back. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 64 sts and work as for Back, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 76 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 34 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 10 sts remain. Bind off.
Pockets. Starting at bottom, cast on 30 sts and work in stockinette st for 3 inches. Bind off. With right side of work toward you, attach contrasting color and work band as follows: 1st row: * S c in each of 3 sts, in next st make an s c in 4th row down (1 long s c made). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Repeat last row for 1 inch. Break off. Work a similar band on sleeves. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Place pockets on as in illustration and sew in place.
Bands. Attach contrasting color at lower edge of Right Front and, along Right Front edge, all around neck edge, down Left Front edge and along lower edge of jacket (working through both thicknesses at lower pocket edge), work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: * S c in each of 3 rows, s c in 4th st from edge of next row (1 long s c made). Repeat from * around, making 2 s c at corners. 2nd rnd: S c in each s c around, making 2 s c at corners. Repeat the last rnd for 1 inch, making a buttonhole 2 inches up from lower edge (on Right Front) on 3rd rnd. (To make a buttonhole, on one rnd ch 4, skip 4 s c—determine number of ch's from size of button—s c in next s c and continue along, making another buttonhole every 3¼ inches thereafter until 5 buttonholes in all are made. Then, on next rnd, make 4 s c in each ch-4.) Break off.
Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
SKIRT
Starting at bottom, with circular needle cast on 306 sts and work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 5 inches. On next rnd and one rnd every 2 inches thereafter, dec. 10 sts at equal distances apart until 226 sts remain, but do not have decreases fall directly over those of previous rnd. Work straight until piece measures 21 inches. On next rnd and every 4th rnd thereafter, dec. 4 sts at equal distances apart until 174 sts remain; but when piece measures 22 inches, work in rows (k 1 row, p 1 row) instead of rnds (thus forming side opening). Work straight until piece measures 28 inches. Bind off. Attach contrasting color at bottom of skirt and work as for bands for 1 inch. Break off.
Sew belting to waistline. Sew slide fastener along opening.
