BLOUSE
Back. Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 108 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches, increasing 19 sts at equal distances apart on last row (127 sts).
Work as follows: 1st row: * K 3, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 3. 2nd row: P across. These 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 8th row twice (131 sts). Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 101 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each row until 41 sts remain. Bind off.
Front. Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 108 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches, increasing 18 sts at equal distances apart on last row (126 sts).
Work in pattern as follows: 1st row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, (k 2 tog., O, k 6) twice, k 2 tog., O, k 4, (k 2 tog., O, k 6) twice, k 2 tog., O, (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 2nd and all even rows: P across. 3rd row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, (O, k 2 tog., k 6) twice, O, k 2 tog., k 4, (O, k 2 tog., k 6) twice, O, k 2 tog., (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 5th row: Same as 1st row. 7th row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, * O, k 2 tog.; then make a cable (to make a cable, slip off next 3 sts on a stitch holder; keeping the stitch holder back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the sts on stitch holder). Repeat from * once more, O, k 2 tog., k 4, O, k 2 tog., make another cable, O, k 2 tog., make another cable, O, k 2 tog., (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 8th row: P across. These 8 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 8 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 140 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 12 inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beginning of each of following 4 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 104 sts remain. On next row, with right side of work toward you, work in pattern across 1st 52 sts, turn. Hereafter work over these 52 sts only, keeping the 20 sts at neck edge in pattern and decreasing 1 st on next row and every 3rd row thereafter inside border, until 30 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts every other row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach thread to neck edge and work opposite side to correspond.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 92 sts and work in ribbing for 1 inch, increasing 12 sts at equal distances apart on last row (104 sts). Then continue, working in pattern, as follows: 1st row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, (k 2 tog., O, k 6) twice, k 2 tog., O, (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 2nd and all even rows: P across. 3rd row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, (O, k 2 tog., k 6) twice, O, k 2 tog., (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 5th row: Same as 1st row. 7th row: (K 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3, * O, k 2 tog., make a cable. Repeat from * once more, O, k 2 tog., (k 3, p 1) 10 times, k 3. 8th row: P across. Repeat these 8 rows until piece measures 4½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 54 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 22 sts remain. Bind off.
Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work 2 rows of s c all around neck edge.
SKIRT
Starting at bottom, with circular needle cast on 385 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. 1st rnd: * K 6, p 1. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: K around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until piece measures 4 inches. On next rnd, dec. 10 sts at equal distances apart, making decreases in center of every 5th k rib. ** Work straight for 1½ inches. On next rnd, dec. 10 sts at equal distances apart, but making decreases in center of k ribs where decreases were not made previously. Repeat from ** 2 more times (345 sts). *** Work straight for 2 inches. Then on next rnd, dec. 8 sts at equal distances apart. Repeat from *** 4 more times (305 sts). Work straight until piece measures 20 inches in all. On next rnd and on 1 rnd every inch thereafter, dec. 12 sts at equal distances apart, until 209 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 29 inches. Bind off. Work 2 rows of s c around bottom of skirt.
