Modernist Pullover Pattern #1059

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 10 balls (1 ounce balls). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size), and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).

Gauge: With No. 2 needles, 9 sts make 1 inch. With No. 4 needles, 8 sts make 1 inch. The blouse is made in 4 individual pieces, in ribbing, then sewed together.

Back Waistband: Starting at bottom of waistband, with No. 2 needles cast on 88 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 5 inches. Then continue in ribbing, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each row until all sts are worked off (thus forming the point at center). Break off.

Front Waistband: Starting at bottom of waistband, with No. 2 needles cast on 100 sts and work as for back waistband.

One-Half of Body (including sleeve): Starting along center of blouse, with No. 4 needles cast on 252 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 4½ inches. Then change to No. 2 needles and work for 1½ inches. Change back to No. 4 needles and work as follows: Next row: * K 2 together, p 2 together, repeat from * across (126 sts on needle). This decrease is to shape armhole. Then work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1¼ inches. Next row: * K 2 together, k 1, p 2, repeat from * across, ending row with k 2 together, k 1, p 1, p 2 together (100 sts). Following row: * K 2, p 2, repeat from * across. Hereafter continue in ribbing of k 2, p 2, decreasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every other row thereafter for 11 times (76 sts remain). * Work in ribbing straight for 1 inch. Decrease 1 st at both ends of next row. Repeat from * 2 more times (70 sts remain). Work in ribbing straight for 5 inches. Decrease 1 st at both ends of next row. Continue in ribbing, decreasing 1 st at both ends of one row after every inch until 62 sts remain on needle. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 52 sts remain. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing straight for 2½ inches. Bind off. Work a similar piece for other half of body.

Assembling of Garment. Sew up side seams of waistbands. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams (edges with the decreases). Place underarm seams of body to side seam of waistband and pin. Then from side seam, count 16 knit-ribs and pin this point to center point of front waistband. Count 13 knit-ribs on opposite side of side seam and pin this point to center point of back waistband. Sew in position, making a ¼ inch seam on wrong side. Sew other half of body to waistband in same way. To join body at center back, match the next 12 knit-ribs (counting from center point) and sew together on wrong side with a ¼ inch seam. Join front in same way, except join the first 8 knit-ribs only. To make collar, turn 1¼ inches over on right side, graduating it into nothing at center front and center back. Press collar.
