Size 34
Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 6 balls. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3. A leather belt.
Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom of waistband, cast on 120 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches, increasing 16 sts across the last row (136 sts). Then work straight in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until work measures 9½ inches from top of waistband.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 112 sts remain. Work straight in stockinette until work measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then shape neckline (for yoke to be fitted in later) working as follows: 1st row: With right side of work toward you, k across first 38 sts, bind off next 36 sts, k across remaining 38 sts. Continue in stockinette st over these last 38 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row until 24 sts remain. Then decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row until 16 sts remain. Bind off. Attach thread at neck edge on opposite side and work to correspond.
Front. Starting at bottom of waistband, cast on 136 sts and work as for back up to armhole, but increasing 22 sts across the last row of ribbing (158 sts).
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 10 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every other row until 128 sts remain on needle. Then start shaping neckline as follows: On next row, work across first 56 sts, bind off next 16 sts, work across remaining 56 sts. Work over these last 56 sts, continuing with armhole decreases, and binding off 3 sts at beginning of rows at neck edge for 4 times, then 1 st at neck edge every row for 4 times. Hereafter, keeping armhole edge straight, decrease 1 st every other row at neck edge until 16 sts remain on needle. Then work straight until armhole measures same as armhole of back. Bind off. Attach thread to neck edge on opposite side and work to correspond.
Sleeves: Starting at bottom of sleeve, cast on 114 sts. 1st row: K 6, turn, p 6, turn. * K 12, turn, p 6, turn. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 6. 2nd row: P across. These 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows alternately until work measures 5½ inches. Then to shape top of sleeve, bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain.
Next row: With right side of work toward you, k 2 together, work in pattern across next 26 sts, k 2 together (thus to shape for dart), work across next 18 sts (these 18 sts are the center 3 ribs which are to be worked straight all the way up), k 2 together (to shape for another dart), work across next 26 sts, k 2 together.
Following row: P across, only decreasing 1 st on each side of the center 18 sts for darts. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately (on each row, there will be 1 st less than in previous row, just before the first dart and after the next dart) until 60 sts remain on needle. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of each row, still continuing with the usual decreases at darts, until 18 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts.
Yoke. Cast on 216 sts and work in rib pattern as for sleeve until work measures 4½ inches. Bind off.
Sleeve and Neck Cords. For a cord 34 inches long (including tassels), measure off about twelve 2½ yd. lengths of thread, twist tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Tie a knot at both ends of cord, about 2 inches in from edge and trim ends. Make 2 more cords same as this.
Sew underarm and shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew yoke in place, having opening at center front, as in illustration. With crochet hook, work 2 rows of s c around sleeves and yoke. Run one cord through yoke on row that is 2 inches below neck edge. Run sleeve cords through row that is 2 inches from sleeve edge.
