MATERIALS—SPINNERIN MARVEL TWIST 5 skeins; 1 pair 14 inch Knitting Needles No. 5; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3; 1 Composition Crochet Hook No. F; 3 yards 2-inch Satin Ribbon for binding; hooks and eyes for fastening.
GAUGE—5½ sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = l inch. Accurate gauge is essential.
PATTERN—Row 1—*K2, P2, repeat from * across row. Row 2—Repeat Row 1. Row 3—P1, *K2, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K2, P1. Row 4—K1, *P2, K2, repeat from * across row, ending P2, K1. Row 5—*P2, K2, repeat from * across row. Row 6—Same as Row 5. Row 7—K1, *P2, K2, repeat from * across row, ending P2, K1. Row 8—P1, *K2, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K2, P1. Repeat these 8 rows throughout.
BODY—Using No. 5 needles, cast on 232 sts. Work even in pattern for 28 inches. Do not stretch work when measuring. Bind off all sts. loosely.
BOTTOM PIECE—Cast on 112 sts. Work in pattern, dec. 1 st. at the beg. of every row until there are 92 sts. on needle. Work ¾ inch even. Then inc. 1 st. at the beg. of every row until there are 112 sts. on needle. Bind off loosely. Be sure to keep pattern while dec. and inc.
CAP—Using No. 5 needles, cast on 72 sts. Work in pattern for 4 inches. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 24 sts. On remaining 24 sts. work in pattern, dec. 1 st. each end of needle every 4th row 6 times, (12 sts. on needle). Work even until back piece measures 8¼ inches from beg. of cap. Bind off loosely. Sew side edges of back piece to bound off edges of cap.
CAPE—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 12 sts. With right side of work toward you, pick up 70 sts. around bottom of cap. Cast on 12 sts., (94 sts. on needle). Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1—*P2, K2, repeat from * across row, ending P2. Row 2—*K2, P2, repeat from * across row, ending K2. Repeat these 2 rows once more. Then work beading as follows: *P2, YO, K2 tog., repeat from * across row, ending P2. Then work 4 more rows of ribbing. Change to No. 5 needles and work in stockinette st. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row), inc. 1 st. in every 10th st. across row. Work 5 rows even. Inc. 1 st. in every 11th st. across row. Work 5 rows even. Inc. 1 st. in every 12th st. across row. Work 5 rows even. Bind off all sts. loosely.
FINISHING—Starting at lower right front edge, work 1 row of S. C. all around cap and shoulder cape. Using double strand of yarn, make a ch. about 27 inches long for neck tie. Knot ends of tie. Bind cap all around face edge with satin ribbon. Fold bottom piece lengthwise. Sew side seams of bottom piece. Fold bunting with opening at center front. Lap right front over left front for 1 inch. Pin bunting to bottom piece at lower edge. Sew bottom piece to bunting neatly. Bind front opening and top of bunting with satin ribbon. Sew hooks and eyes in place for fastening.
