SIZES—8 (9½).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 8, the second for size 9½.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN CANDOUR 1 skein; 1 pair double point needles No. 1; 1 pair double point needles No. 4.

MEASUREMENTS—Top of leg to heel 8 (10) inches, length of foot 8 (9½) inches.

GAUGE—7 sts. = 1 inch. 10 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—For 2149-A—Cable on 6 sts. Ribbing P2, K1, P2. Round 1—*K6, P2, K1, P2, repeat from * for 1 round. Round 2—*slip first 3 sts. to double point needle and hold in front of work, knit next 3 sts., K3 sts. from double point needle, (this is a cable twist), P2, K1, P2 and repeat from * for 1 round. Rounds 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8—Same as Round 1. Repeat from Round 1, twisting cable every 8th round. For 2149-B—Stockinette stitch (knit every round) with cuff in ribbing of K2, P2.

Using No. 1 needles, cast on 60 (72) sts. and join; being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2 (2½) inches. Change to No. 4 needles and dec. as follows: *K6, P2, K2 tog., P2, repeat from * for 1 round (55 (66) sts.). Now work in pattern given above un­til sock measures 8 (10) inches from start, or desired length to heel. Then work as follows: Slip last 11 (13) sts. worked to 1 needle and knit the next 17 (19) sts. onto this needle (28 (32) sts. for heel). Slip remaining 27 (34) sts. to 2 needles to be worked later for instep. On 28 (32) sts. of heel, work back and forth in stockinette st. for 24 rows. Turn heel as follows: Row 1—P16 (18), P2 tog., P1, turn. Row 2—Slip 1, K5, slip 1, K1. P.S.S.O., K1, turn. Row 3—Slip 1, P6, P2 tog., P1, turn. Continue in this man­ner to work 1 st. more each row until all heel sts. are worked (16 (18) sts.). K8 (9) sts. onto 1 needle, pick up 13 (14) sts. along side of heel onto first needle. Work in pattern over instep needle, pick up 13 (14) sts. along other side of heel on 3rd needle and K8 (9) heel sts. Work as follows: Round 1—Work to within 3 sts. of end of first needle, K2 tog., K1. Work in pattern across instep sts. On third needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O. and knit to end of needle. Round 2—Knit first and third needles and work 2nd needle in pat­tern. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 14 (17) sts. on each heel needle. Work even as in Round 2 until foot measures 6 (7½) inches from back of heel or 2 inches shorter than desired length of foot. Dec. for toe as follows: Discontinue pattern on instep needle and knit all sts. Round 1—Knit to within 3 sts. of end of first needle, K2 tog., K1. On 2nd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., knit to within 3 sts. of end of needle, K2 tog., K1. On third needle K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., and knit to end. Round 2—Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until 8 sts. remain on 2nd needle and 4 on each of 1st and 3rd needles. Break yarn. Weave these sts. together.
