Ice Nymph Sweater Set Pattern

SIZES 10 (12-14).

NOTE—Underline or circle the numbers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 10, the second for size 12, the third for size 14.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN MARVEL TWIST 5 (5-6) skeins white, 1 skein each green, yellow, red and blue; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3; 1 24-inch circular needle No. 5; 1 set double point needles No. 3; 1 set double point needles No. 5.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 28 (30-32) inches; bottom to underarm 9¾ (10-10¼) inches, sleeve 13¾ (14½-15½) inches, socks 9½ (10).

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Stockinette Stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Bands in ribbing of K2, P2.

SWEATERBACK—Using No. 3 needles and white yarn, cast on 76 (80-84) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 circular needle and knit 1 row, inc. across row at even intervals to 84 (90-96) sts. Then purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row. Drop white, knit 1 row in green. (Note: When work­ing the Fair Isle design, after having knitted the green stripe, do not turn work, but knit next white row. This is the reason for circular needle, so that the white yarn will not have to be broken. However, the colored yarn is broken as soon as it has been used.) Work the 7 rows of Pattern A following chart. Knit 1 row in white. Knit 1 row in green. Then purl 1 row, knit 1 row alternately for 7 (9-11) rows. Knit 1 row in blue. Knit 1 row in white. Knit 1 row in red. Purl 1 row in white. K 1 row in green. Knit 1 row in white. For Sizes 10 & 14 only: Work 18 rows of Pattern B, following chart. For Size 12 only: Start pattern 6 sts. in from edge of chart and follow chart, starting right side rows 6 sts. in from edge of chart. For All Sizes: Purl 1 row in white, knit 1 row in green, knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in red, purl 1 row in white, knit 1 row in blue. With white continue as fol­lows: knit 1 row, purl 1 row. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row twice (72 (78-84 sts.). Continue to work in stockinette st. until there are 12 rows in white. Knit 1 row in green, knit 1 row in white. Work Pattern A, following chart. Knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in green. Now work even in stockinette st. in white, until armhole measures 5¾ (6-6½) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (8-8) rows, bind off 7 (6-6) sts. Place remain­ing 30 (30-36) sts. on holder to be worked later.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole measures 4¼ (4½-5) inches straight up from underarm. For Size 12 Only: When working Pattern B, start pattern on right side following chart, but end knit rows 6 sts. before end of pattern. On purl rows, start pattern 6 sts. in from edge. Work first 24 (27-27) sts. for left shoulder and place on holder. Work center 24 (24-30) sts. and place on holder for front of neck. On 24 (27-27) sts. of right shoulder, work back and forth dec. 1 st. at neck edge, every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 5¾ (6-6½) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 7 (6-6) sts. every other row, 3 (4-4) times. Work other shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES—Using No. 3 needles and white yarn, cast on 44 (48-48) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2¾ (3-3) inches. Change to No. 5 circular needle and knit 1 row, inc. at even intervals to 48 (54-60) sts. Purl 1 row, knit 1 row alternately for 7 (9-11) rows. Knit 1 row in green, knit 1 row in white. Work Pattern A, follow­ing chart. Knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in green. Then work in stockinette st. in white, inc. 1 st. each end of needle every 8th row 6 times, (60 (66-72) sts.). Work even until sleeve measures 13¾ (14½-15½) inches or desired length to under­arm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 5 sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row for 2 (2½-2¾) inches. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (6-8) rows, bind off 3 sts. Bind off re­maining 16 (18-16) sts.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes, matching underarm seams. Using No. 3 double point needles, and white yarn, pick up 100 (100-104) sts. around neck. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 3 inches. Bind off loosely.

CAP—Using No. 5 circular needle and white yarn, cast on 90 (96) sts. (Cap in­structions are the same for sizes 12 and 14.) Knit 1 row, purl 1 row for 6 (8) rows. Knit 1 row in blue, knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in red, purl 1 row in white, knit 1 row in green, knit 1 row in white. Work Pattern A following chart. Knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in green, purl 1 row in white, purl 1 row in red, knit 1 row in white, knit 1 row in blue. Now purl 1 row, knit 1 row in white until piece measures 4½ (5) inches. Bind off center 20 (24) sts. Working on 1 side of cap only, (35 (36) sts.), work in stockinette st. for 4 (6) rows. At outside edge, bind off 7 (6) sts. 5 (6) times. Work other side of cap to correspond.

FINISHING—Sew up back and top seams. Work 2 rows of S. C. across face of cap. Using 4 strands of yarn, make a ch 40 inches long. Work 1 row of slip st. along this ch. Sew ch around bottom edge of cap. Using strands of each color used, make 2 big pom-poms and sew to ends of tie.

MITTENS—Using No. 3 double point needles, cast on 40 sts. and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 double point needles and work as fol­lows: For Size 10 only: Knit 1 round, dec. 4 sts. in round at even intervals to make 36 sts. Knit 1 round. For Sizes 12 & 14: Knit 2 rounds even on 40 sts. Start thumb gore as follows: Round 1—K1, inc. 1 st. in each of the next 2 sts. Knit to end of round. Round 2—Knit. Round 3—K1, inc. 1, K2, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Round 4—Knit. Continue in this manner to inc. 2 sts. every other round, having 2 sts. more between inc. in each inc. round. When there are 10 (12) sts. between inc. sts., work as follows: K2, slip next 14 (14) sts. onto holder for thumb, cast on 2 sts. in their place, knit to end of round (36 (42) sts.). Knit 1 (2) rounds even. Work 1 round in blue, 1 round in white, 1 round in red, 1 round in white, 1 round in green, 1 round in white. Work Pat­tern A, following chart. Work 1 round in white, 1 round in green, 1 round in white, 1 round in red, 1 round in white, 1 round in blue. Then with white work as follows: For Size 10 only: Knit 1 round even. *K4, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 1 round even. *K3, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Continue in this manner to dec. every other round, having 1 st. less between dec. until 6 sts. remain. Draw yarn through all sts. and fasten off on wrong side of mitten. For Sizes 12 & 14: Knit 3 rounds even. *K5, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 1 round even. From this point, follow dec. on Size 10 mitten until 6 sts. re­main. Fasten off.

THUMB—Slip 12 (14) sts. from holder onto 2 needles. Join yarn at base of thumb and pick up 4 over the 2 cast on for palm. Divide these 16 (18) sts. on 3 needles and knit round and round dec. 2 sts. over the 4 picked up twice, 14 (16) sts. Knit round and round for 1 (1½) inches. For Size 10 Only: *K5, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round (12 sts.). Knit 1 round even. Then for both sizes; *K2, K2 tog. repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 1 round even. *K1, K2 tog., repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 1 round even. K2 tog. around and draw yarn through all sts. Fasten off.

SOCKS—Using white yarn and No. 5 needles, cast on 48 (54) sts. and join being careful not to twist sts. Knit 3 rounds even. Then work stripes and pat­tern as on mittens. Then knit 2 rounds in white. Purl 1 round on right side of work for turnback. Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K2, P2 (adding 2 sts. in sizes 12 & 14 to make 56 sts.) for 5¾ (6) inches from start. Start heel as follows: P 24 (28) sts. Place remaining 24 (28) sts. on 2 needles to be worked later for instep. On the 24 (28) sts. of heel, work back and forth in stockinette st., slipping 1st st. of each row for 13 (15) rows, ending with a knit row. Then turn heel as follows: P14 (16) P2 tog., P1, turn, slip 1, K5, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K1, turn, slip 1, P6, P2 tog., P1, turn. Continue in this manner to work 1 st. more each row until all sts. are worked (14 (16) sts. on needles). Divide heel sts. on 2 needles. Place instep sts. on 1 needle. On first needle, pick up and knit 9 (10) sts. along side of heel. Work across instep sts. in ribbing (second needle). On third needle, pick up and knit 9 (10) sts. along other side of heel and K7 (8) heel sts. onto this needle. Work 2 heel needles in knit and instep sts. in ribbing until heel is shaped. Shape gusset and foot as follows: Round 1—Knit to within 3 sts. of end of first needle, K2 tog., K1. Work in ribbing across 2nd needle. At the beg. of 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., and knit to end. Round 2—Work even. Repeat these 2 rounds un­til there are 12 (14) sts. on each heel needle. Now work all sts. in ribbing until sock measures 6 (7) inches from back of heel. This is the point where any ad­justments in length of foot are made. Make foot longer or shorter as desired at this point, allowing 2½ inches for the toe shaping. Discontinue all ribbing and dec. toe as follows: Round 1—Knit to within 3 sts. of end of first needle, K2 tog., K1. At the beg. of 2nd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., knit to within 3 sts. of end of needle, K2 tog., K1. At the beg. of 3rd needle, K1, slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., knit to end of round. Round 2—Knit. Repeat these 2 rounds until 4 sts. remain on each of 2 heel needles and 8 sts. on instep needle. Place 8 heel sts. on 1 needle and weave these 8 sts. to 8 sts. of instep. Work 1 row of S. C. around cast on edge of cuff.
