Little Love Sweater & Beanie Pattern

SIZES—4 (6-8).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 4, the second for size 6, the third for size 8.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN MARVEL TWIST 3 (4-4) skeins; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 3; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 5; 1 set double point needles No. 3; 1 set double point needles No. 5.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 23 (24- 26) inches; bottom to underarm 10 (10½-11) inches; sleeve to underarm 10½ (11½-13) inches.

GAUGE—6½ sts. = 1 inch. 11 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Multiple of 3 plus 2. Row 1—*K2, slip next st. as if to purl, repeat from * across row, ending K2. Row 2—*P2, slip next st. as if to purl, repeat from * across row, ending P2. Row 3—Knit. Row 4—Repeat Row 2. Row 5—Repeat Row 1. Row 6—Purl. Repeat these 6 rows throughout.

BACK—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 76 (80-84) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2 (2¼-2½) inches. Change to No. 5 needles. For Size 4 only: inc. 1 st. For Size 8 only: inc. 1 st. each end of needle on first row of pattern; (77 (80-86) sts. on needle). Work in pattern until back measures 10 (10½-11) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (3-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row 2 (2-3) times; (67 (70-72) sts.). Work even in pattern until armhole measures 4½ (5-5¼) inches straight up from underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 6 (8-8) rows, bind off 6 (5-5) sts. Place remaining 31 (30-32) sts. on holder to be worked later for back of neck.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole measures 3½ (4-4¼) inches straight up from underarm. Work first 20 (22-22) sts. in pattern and place on holder for left shoulder. Work next 27 (26-28) sts. in pattern and place on holder to be worked later for front of neck. On remaining 20 (22-22) sts. of right shoulder, work back and forth in pattern dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row twice. Work even in pattern until armhole measures 4½ (5-5¼) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of arm edge, bind off 6 (5-5) sts., 3 (4-4) times. Work other shoulder to correspond.

SLEEVES—Using No. 3 needles, cast on 40 (44-44) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles, inc. 1 st. (for size 4 only), and work in pattern, inc. 1 st. each end of needle every inch until there are 55 (58- 60) sts. on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 10½ (11½-13) inches from start or desired length to underarm, in­cluding 1½ inches for cuff turnback. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 3 (4-4) sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle every other row until 29 (30-30) sts. remain. At the beg. of each of the next 6 rows, bind off 2 sts. Bind off re­maining 17 (18-18) sts.

FINISHING—Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in armholes matching underarm seams. Using No. 3 double point needles, pick up 92 (96-96) sts. around neck. Work in rib­bing of K2, P2 for 2¼ (2½-2¾) inches. Bind off loosely, knitting the K sts. and purling the P sts.

BEANIE—Using No. 2 double point needles, cast on 108 sts. and join being careful not to twist sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 8 rounds. Change to No. 5 needles and work as follows: Round 1—*K2, slip 1, repeat from * to end of round. Round 2—Repeat Round 1. Round 3—Knit. Rounds 4 & 5—Repeat Round 1. Round 6—Knit. Round 7—*Slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., (slip 1, K2) 5 times, slip 1, repeat from * to end of round. Round 8—*K1, (slip 1, K2) 5 times, slip 1, repeat from * to end of round. Round 9—Knit. Rounds 10 & 11—Repeat Round 8. Round 12—Knit. Round 13—*Slip 1, K1, P.S.S.O., K2, (slip 1, K2) 4 times, slip 1, repeat from * to end of round. Continue in pattern, dec. as before on 18th round, then every other round until 9 sts. remain. Break off yarn and draw through all sts. Fasten off. Make a tassel and sew in place on top of beanie.
