Girl's Mittens Pattern

SIZE 6½.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN CANDOUR 1 skein; 1 set double point needles No. 1; 1 set double point needles No. 2.

MEASUREMENTS—Cuff to tip 10 inches, across hand 3¼ inches.

GAUGE—8 sts. = 1 inch. 11 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Knob St. row is worked as follows: *K3, K next st. ** but leave on left-hand needle, place loop just made back on left-hand needle and knit it. Knit again through original loop and repeat from ** until there are 4 new sts. on right-hand needle. Drop original st. from left-hand needle. Pull the first 3 loops over the last one (knob st.). Repeat from * for 1 round.

LEFT MITTEN—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 48 sts. loosely, being careful not to twist sts. (16 sts. on each of 3 needles). Knit 3 rounds even. *K2 tog., YO, re­peat from * for 1 round. Knit 2 rounds even. *Work a knob st., K3, repeat from * for 1 round. Knit 2 rounds even. *K2 tog., YO, repeat from * for 1 round. Change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2½ inches. Change to No. 2 needles and knit 3 rounds even. Start thumb gore as follows: Round 1—K5, inc. 1 (by knitting first in front and then in the back of the st.) K1, inc. 1, K1, *work 1 knob st., K3, repeat from * to last 2 sts. of 2nd needle, K2, knit across 3rd needle. Rounds 2 & 3—Knit even. Round 4—K5, inc. 1, K3, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Round 5—K15, * work 1 knob st., K3, repeat from * to last 4 sts. of 2nd needle, K4, knit to end of round. Round 6—Knit even. Round 7—K5, inc. 1, K5, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Round 8—Knit even. Round 9—K15, *work 1 knob st. K3, repeat from * to last 2 sts. of 2nd needle, K2, knit to end of round. Round 10—K5, inc. 1, K7, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Rounds 11 & 12—Knit even. Round 13—K5, inc. 1, K9, inc. 1, *K3, work 1 knob st., repeat from * to last 4 sts. of 2nd needle, K4. Knit to end of round. Rounds 14 & 15—Knit even. Continue to inc. thumb gore in this manner every 3rd round, having 2 more sts. between inc. each inc. round, until there are 13 sts. between inc. (7 inc. rounds). AT THE SAME TIME, work a knob st. round every 4th round, being sure to work a knob st. in center st. of 3 plain sts. of previous knob st. row. Work 2 rounds even after last inc. K6, slip next 15 sts. to a holder. Cast on 6 sts. in place of the 15 sts., knit to end of round. Work 1 round even. Dec. 1 st. in center of 6 sts. cast on every round 3 times, (18 sts. on 1st needle, 16 sts. on other 2 needles). Work even in pattern until mitten meas­ures 8½ inches from 1st YO row, or 1½ inches shorter than desired length. Re­arrange sts. as follows: Slip 9 sts. from 1st needle to 2nd needle. Slip 13 sts. of 2nd needle to 3rd needle. Slip all sts. of 3rd needle to 1st needle, (25 sts. on 1st needle). *Dec. 1 st. each end of 1st needle, 1 st. at the beg. of 2nd needle and 1 st. at the end of 3rd needle. Work 1 round even. (Continue to work knob st. pattern on back of mitten while dec.). Repeat from * until 14 sts. remain. K2 tog., 7 times. Break yarn, draw through all sts.; draw up and fasten securely.

THUMB—Slip 15 sts. for thumb onto 3 needles. Join yarn and pick up 6 sts. over those cast on for palm. On next round, K tog. the last st. before the 6 picked up and the first st. of the 6 picked up, to make 20 sts. Knit round and round for 1¾ inches. *Dec. 1 st. in center of each needle. K 1 round even. Repeat from * twice more. Break yarn, draw through all sts. and fasten securely.

RIGHT MITTEN—Work same as left mitten to start of thumb gore. Then work as follows: Round 1—Inc. 1, K1, inc. 1, K23 *work a knob st., K3, repeat from * to end of round. Rounds 2 & 3—Knit even. Round 4—Inc. 1, K3, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Round 5—K32, *work 1 knob st., K3, repeat from * to last 3 sts. of 3rd needle, K3. Round 6—Knit even. Round 7—Inc. 1, K5, inc. 1, knit to end of round. Continue to work mitten to correspond with left-hand to top of shaping. Re­arrange sts. as follows: Slip 1 st. from 1st needle to 3rd needle. Slip 8 sts. from 2nd needle to 1st needle (25 sts. on 1st needle). Slip 4 sts. from 3rd needle to 2nd needle (12 sts. on 2nd needle and 13 sts. on 3rd needle). Finish same as left mitten.

FINISHING—Turn bottom edge of cuff on first row of holes and hem to in­side of mitten. Using double strand of yarn, make a loose ch 64 in. long. Fasten to inside of cuff on each mitten on line with thumb.

NOTE—These mittens may be made plain, without the knob st. pattern by dis­regarding the pattern and knitting these rows even.
