Class President Sweater Set Pattern

SIZES—10 (12-14).

NOTE—Underline or circle the num­bers applying to the size desired. The first number in each group is for size 10, the second for size 12, the third for size 14.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN SPINDRIFT 6 (6-7) skeins for Slipover, 7 (7-8) skeins for Cardigan; 1 pair Knit­ting Needles No. 2; 1 pair Knitting Nee­dles No. 6; 1½ yards 1-inch grosgrain ribbon; 7 buttons.

MEASUREMENTS—Chest 28 (30-32) inches, bottom to underarm 13 (14-15) inches, sleeve to underarm 13¾ (14½-15½) inches.

GAUGE—6 sts. = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Stockinette St. (knit 1 row, purl 1 row). Wrist, waist and neck bands—ribbing of K2, P2.

SLIPOVERBACK—Using No. 2 needles, cast on 84 (92-100) sts. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2 inches. Change to No. 6 needles and knit 1 row, purl 1 row until back measures 13 (14-15) inches from start or desired length to underarm. At the beg. of each of the next 2 rows, bind off 6 (7-8) sts. Work even until armhole measures 5½ (5¾-6¼) inches straight up from underarm. Place all sts. on a holder to be worked later.

FRONT—Work in same manner as back until armhole measures 3½ (3¾-4¼) inches straight up from underarm. Work 26 (27-29) sts. and place on holder for left shoulder. Work center 20 (24-26) sts. and slip onto holder for front of neck. On last 26 (27-29) sts. work back and forth, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work these 23 (24-26) sts. in garter st. (knit every row) until armhole measures 5½ (5¾-6¼) inches straight up from underarm. Slip these sts. onto holder and work other shoulder to cor­respond, reversing shaping. Weave 23 (24-26) sts. of front shoulders to 23 (24-26) sts. of back shoulders. SLEEVES—With right side of work toward you and using No. 6 needles, pick up 76 (80-84) sts. around armhole. Work 2 (2-1) inches even. Dec. 1 st. each end of needle. Repeat this dec. every inch 10 (11-13) times more (54 (56-56) sts.). Work even until sleeve measures 11½ (12¾-13) inches from underarm. On next row, dec. across row at even intervals to 48 sts. Change to No. 2 needles and work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 2½ inches. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING—Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Using No. 2 double point needles, pick up 96 (100-104) sts. around neck. Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 1 inch. Bind off loosely, knitting the K sts. and purling the P sts.

CARDIGANBACK—Work in same manner as back of slipover until armhole measures 5 (5-5¼) inches above under­arm. Work 26 (27-29) sts. for right shoulder and place on holder, work center 20 (24-26) sts. and slip on holder for back of neck. On remaining 26 (27-29) sts. of left shoulder, work back and forth, dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole meas­ures 5¾ (6-6½) inches straight up from underarm. Place these sts. onto holder and work other shoulder to correspond, reversing shaping.

LEFT FRONT—Cast on 44 (48-52) sts. and work as follows: Row 1—*K2, P2, repeat from * to last 8 sts., K8 (right side of work). Row 2—K6, P2, *K2, P2 repeat from * to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches. Change to No. 6 needles and work in stockinette st., keep­ing 6 sts. at center front in garter st. for border. Work even until front measures 13 (14-15) inches from start. At arm edge, bind off 6 (7-8) sts. Work even until armhole measures 4¾ (5-5½) inches straight up from underarm. At beg. of neck edge, slip 12 (14-15) sts. onto holder. Dec. 1 st. at neck edge every other row 3 times. Change to garter st. and work even on these 23 (24-26) sts. until armhole measures 5¾ (6-6½) inches straight up from underarm. Slip these sts. onto holder and work other front to correspond, reversing shaping. Weave sts. of front shoulder to sts. of back shoulder.

SLEEVES—Work in same manner as slipover sleeves.

FINISHING—Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Using No. 2 needles, pick up 102 (106-110) sts. around neck and work as follows: Row 1—K6, *P2, K2, repeat from * across row to last 8 sts., P2, K6. Row 2—K6, *K2, P2, repeat from * across row to last 8 sts., K8. Repeat these 2 rows for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. After cardigan is blocked, sew grosgrain ribbon to outside of front along garter st. border. Have 7 machine-made buttonholes made on right front.
