Helmet Pattern

SIZE—1

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN HEAVEN SPUN 1 ball; 1 pair Knitting Needles No. 1; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

MEASUREMENTS—18 inches around head, 13 inches from forehead to back of neck.

GAUGE—8½ sts. = 1 inch. 16 rows = 1 inch. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERN—Garter Stitch (knit every row).

Cast on 8 sts. and work as follows: Row 1—Inc. 1 st. at the beg. of row (back edge of cap). Row 2—Inc. 2 sts. at the beg. of row (front edge of cap). Repeat these 2 rows until there are 60 sts. on needle.

Then at front edge, cast on 12 sts. Dec. as follows: at front edge, dec. 1 st. every 6th row 10 times, then every row 12 times, (dec. by knitting tog. the 2nd and 3rd sts. from edge). AT SAME TIME, dec. 1 st. at back edge every 4th row 11 times, then every other row 6 times. Then at back edge bind off 4 sts. at the beg. of next 8 rows. Work other side to correspond.

CENTER PANEL—Cast on 16 sts. Work even in Garter st. for 13 ins. Bind off.

STRAPS—Cast on 64 sts. Work even in Garter st. for 12 rows. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING—Sew side pieces to each side of center panel from last dec. on front edge to last dec. on back edge. Work 1 row of S. C. all around entire hel­met. Sew straps in place.
