MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Columbia-Minerva Calibar (2 oz skein) - 18(20-22-24) skeins
OR
Columbia-Minerva Nylon and Wool Calibrette (2 oz skein) - 16(18-20-21) skeins
Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 9 and 10½
Gauge: Pattern St on Size 10½ needles – 3½ sts to 1 inch; 5 rows to 1 inch
BACK: With Size 9 needles cast on 70(74-78-82) sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 1½ inches. Change to Size 10½ needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1 - Right side: On Sizes 38, 42 and 44 only K 1(2-1), All Sizes P 2, * K 4, P 2, repeat from * across, ending Sizes 38, 42 and 44 only K 1(2-1). Row 2: P. Row 3: K 4(3-5-4), P 2, * K 4, P 2, repeat from * across, ending K 4(3-5-4). Row 4: P. Repeat these 4 rows for pat. Work until back measures 18(18½-19-19½) inches or desired length from start. Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times - 56(60-64-68) sts on needle. Work until armholes measure 8½(9-9½-10) inches straight above bound-off sts. Shoulders: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 6 rows, then 4(6-7-7) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Sl rem'ing 18(18-20-24) sts onto st holder.
RIGHT FRONT: With Size 9 needles cast on 36(38-40-42) sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 1½ inches. Change to Size 10½ needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1 - Right side: On Sizes 38 and 44 only K 3, All Sizes: P 2, * K 4, P 2, repeat from * across, ending Sizes 38, 42 and 44 only K 1(2-1). Continue in pat until front measures same as back to underarm, ending with same pat row. Armhole: Bind off 4 sts at side edge. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 29(31-33-35) sts on needle. Work until armhole measures same as on back, ending with same pat row. Shoulder: Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge 3 times, then bind off 4(6-6-7) sts at same edge once, ending at front edge. Sl rem'ing 10(10-12-13) sts onto st holder, do not break yarn.
LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond to Right Front, reversing the pat and shaping. Place a marker for 6th buttonhole at front edge before starting shoulder shaping. End at shoulder edge.
SLEEVES: With Size 9 needles cast on 32(34-36-38) sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 4½ inches, inc'ing 1 st each side on last row - 34(36-38-40) sts on needle. Change to Size 10½ needles and work in pat as follows: Row 1 - Right side: K 1(2-3-4), P 2, * K 4, P 2, repeat from * across, ending K 1(2-3-4). Continue in pat, inc'ing 1 st each side every 6th row 9 times, then every 8th row twice - 56(58-60-62) sts on needle. Work until sleeve measures 21(21-22-22) inches or 2 inches more than desired length from start. Cap of Sleeve: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every row 6 times, then every other row 7(8-9-10) times. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows. Bind off rem'ing 10 sts.
Sew shoulder seams.
HOOD: Place sts of left front, back and right front onto Size 10½ needles - 38(38-44-50) sts on needle. Starting at right front, work in pat for 4(4-8-8) rows. Inc Row: Work 7(7-10-13) sts, * inc 1 st by K'ing in back of st in row below, work 6 sts, repeat from * 3 times, inc 1 st, work to end of row - 43(43-49-55) sts on needle. Work in pat for 5 rows with P 3 in the inc'd ribs. On Sizes 38 and 40 only: Work 4 sts, * inc 1 st, work 7 sts, repeat from * 4 times more, inc 1 st, work to end of row - 49 sts on needle. All Sizes: Work in pat with P 3 in the inc'd ribs until hood measures 8½ inches from back of neck, ending on right side. Next row P 24(24-24-27), place marker on needle, P to end of row. Dec Row: Work to 3 sts before marker, sl 1, K 1, psso, K 1, K 2 tog, work to end of row - 47(47-47-53) sts on needle. Repeat decs every other row 2(2-2-3) times more - 43(43-43-47) sts on needle. Next row P to 2 sts before marker, sl 1, P 1, psso, P 1, P 2 tog, P to end of row. Continue to dec before and after center st on next 2(2-2-4) rows - 37 sts on needle. On next P row, P 17, P 2 tog, break yarn, leaving an end for weaving. Fold in half and weave or sew seam.
FRONT BORDER: With Size 9 needles cast on 6 sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing until border fits around fronts and hood when slightly stretched. Place markers for 5 more buttonholes evenly spaced on left front having first marker at top of ribbing - 6th marker has been placed opposite start of shoulder. Sew border in place, leaving an opening for buttonholes at markers.
Sew sleeves in place, then sew underarm and sleeve seams.
