Raglan Cardigan Pattern #736-27

Directions are for Size 12. Changes for Sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Columbia-Minerva Calibar (2 oz skein) - Main Color (MC) - 15(17-19-21) skeins; 1 skein each of Colors 1 and 2 for each Size
OR
Columbia-Minerva Nylon and Wool Calibrette (2 oz skein) - Main Color (MC) - 14(15-17-19) skeins; 1 skein each of Colors 1 and 2 for each Size

Knitting Needles: 1 pair each "Boye" Sizes 8 and 10

Gauge: Pattern Stitch on Size 10 needles - 3½ sts to 1 inch; 5 rows to 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH - Multiple of 4 sts plus 2. Row 1 - Right side: K 2, * P 2, K 2, repeat from * across. Row 2: P. Row 3: P 2, * K 2, P 2, repeat from * across. Row 4: P. Repeat these 4 rows for pat.

BACK: With MC and Size 8 needles cast on 61(65-69-73) sts. Row 1 - Right side: K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across. Row 2: P 1, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, ending with Row 1. P next row, inc'ing 5 sts evenly across - 66(70-74-78) sts on needle. Change to Size 10 needles and work in pat until back measures 13(13-13½- 13½) inches or 1 inch less than desired length to underarm, ending with Row 2 or 4 of pat. Raglan Bands: Join about 12 yards of Color 1 and K 1 st, with MC work in pat to last st, join another 12 yards of Color 1 and K last st. Twist yarns when changing colors to avoid a hole. Next row K 2 in Color 1, with MC work in pat to last 2 sts, K 2 in Color 1. Work 1 more st in garter st in Color 1 on next 2 rows. Raglan Armholes: Continuing 4 st bands on each side, dec 1 st inside each band every other row 23(24-25-26) times. Bind off rem'ing 20(22-24-26) sts for neck.

LEFT FRONT: With MC and Size 8 needles cast on 38(40-42-44) sts. Row 1 - Right side: P 1, K 1 to last 6 sts, K 6 for front border. Row 2: K 6, * P 1, K 1, re­peat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows for 2 inches, ending with Row 1. Next row K 6, P to end of row. Change to Size 10 needles and work in pat, keeping the 6 sts in garter st for front border. Work until front measures same as back to raglan bands, join Color 1 at side edge and work raglan band as on back. Raglan Armhole: Dec 1 st inside raglan band every other row 4 times. Next row work 1 more st in garter st on front border, then every 4th row 8(9-10-10) times more AND AT THE SAME TIME continue to dec 1 st inside raglan band every other row 19(20-21-23) times more. Sl the rem'ing 15(16-17-17) sts of collar onto st holder. Place markers for 6 buttons at front edge, having first marker 1 inch above lower edge and 6th marker 1 inch below start of collar.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing shaping and working buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Right side of work K 2, bind off next 2 sts, work to end of row. Next row cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With MC and Size 8 needles cast on 31(33-35-37) sts. Work in ribbing same as on back for 2 inches, ending with Row 1. Next row P across, in­c'ing 3(1-3-1) sts - 34(34-38-38) sts on needle. Change to Size 10 needles and work in pat, inc'ing 1 st each side every 8th row 7(4-7-4) times, then on Sizes 14 and 18 only inc 1 st each side every 6th row 4 times - 48(50-52-54) sts on needle. Work until sleeve measures 16(16-16½-16½) inches or 1 inch less than desired length to underarm. With Color 2 work raglan bands as on back until there are 4 sts in Color 2. Raglan Cap of Sleeve: Dec 1 st inside each raglan band as on back, then dec 1 st inside each band every 4th row 4 times, then every other row 14(15-15-16) times more. Bind off rem'ing 10(10-12-12) sts.

Overcast or weave sleeves to fronts and back for flat seam.

COLLAR: Sl the 15(16-17-17) sts from front border onto Size 10 needles and continue in garter st, inc'ing 1 st at back edge every other row 4 times - 19(20-21- 21) sts on needle. Work until collar fits neck edge to center back. Work other side to correspond. Weave or sew collar at center back, then sew to neck edge.

Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Face front edges with grosgrain ribbon, working around buttonholes.
