BACK
With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 100 stitches. Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 2½ inches. Change to size 3 needles and knit across the next row, increasing to 105 stitches (increase about every 20th stitch). Purl back, then work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until piece measures 12 inches, ending with a purl row. The design and underarm decreases are started on the next row. Decreases are made by binding off the number of stitches shown. Always slip the first stitch when binding off. For the shoulders, start on the indicated row and bind off at the beginning of 6 consecutive rows the number of stitches shown, placing the remaining 33 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband.
LEFT FRONT
With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 57 stitches. Work the first 48 stitches in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2; then knit 1, purl 1, for the remaining 9 stitches. Continue working these 9 stitches in the seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1, on both the right and wrong sides) for the front band. When the ribbing measures 2½ inches and with the seed stitch at the left hand side, change to size 3 needles and work in stockinette stitch to correspond with the back. Follow the half of the diagram marked "left front," continuing the seed stitch for the front band. For the neck opening, work the first 18 stitches and place them on a stitch holder for the neckband. Then work the remaining 29 stitches for the shoulder. For the neck decreases, knit to within 3 stitches of the end of the row, knit 2 together, knit 1. For the shoulder, start on the indicated row and bind off at the beginning of every other row the number of stitches shown.
RIGHT FRONT
Cast on 57 stitches on size 2 needles. Seed stitch the first 9 stitches and knit 2, purl 2, for the remaining 48 stitches. When the ribbing measures 2½ inches and with the seed stitch at the right hand side, start the stockinette stitch and follow the half of diagram marked "right front," continuing the seed stitch for the front band. The first buttonhole is made in the seed stitch half way up the ribbing, and the other seven, every 2¼ inches. To make a buttonhole, bind off the 4th, 5th, and 6th stitches in from the edge. On the next row, cast on 3 stitches to replace these. For the neck opening, work the first 29 stitches and place the remaining 18 stitches on a stitch holder for the neckband. Work the 29 stitches until the shoulder is completed, binding off for the shoulder the number of stitches shown to correspond with left front. For the neck decreases, knit 1, slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit.
SLEEVE
With size 2 needles and the main color, cast on 48 stitches and work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2, for 3 inches. Change to size 3 needles and knit across the next row, increasing to 51 stitches. Purl back, then work in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 stitch at each end of a row after 1 inch, then at each end of every 6th row until there are 81 stitches. When piece measures 15½ inches, ending with a purl row, follow the diagram for the decreases and design. The decreases are made by binding off the number of stitches shown. Then bind off the remaining 21 stitches.
