Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Boucle, 10 balls of White (for blouse) and 30 balls of color 856 Dk. Green (for jacket and skirt). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (3¾ mm. size). Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3. A lead dress weight. 4 buttons and a 30-inch length elastic.
Gauge: 9 sts equal 1 inch; 8 rows equal 1 inch, before blocking.
Blouse
Back. Beginning at waistband with No. 2 needles, cast on 59 sts. 1st row: * K 1, make p 1 and k 1 both in next st (working into front half each time), repeat from * to end of row, ending row with k 1 (88 sts on needle). 2nd row: P 1, * k 2 together, make p 1 and k 1 both in next st, repeat from * to end of row, ending row with p 1 (87 sts). 3rd row: K 1, * make p 1 and k 1 both in next st, k 2 together, repeat from * to end of row, ending row with k 1 (88 sts).
Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until band measures 4 inches. Then change to No. 5 needles and work 3 inches in pattern. Work next 4 inches increasing 1 st at both ends every 4th row.
Armhole. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Work 1 row evenly. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Work 1 row evenly. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Work 4½ inches evenly.
Shoulder. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Work 1 row evenly and bind off tightly.
Front. With No. 2 needles, cast on 61 sts. Work same as for back for 7 inches (91 sts) changing to No. 5 needles after first 4 inches. Work next 4 inches increasing 1 st at end of every row.
Armhole. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Work 15 rows without decreasing. Increase 1 st at both ends of each of next 6 rows. Work 1 row evenly. Increase 1 st at both ends of next row. Repeat the last 2 rows 8 more times. Work 1 row evenly.
Shoulder. Same as for back.
Sleeves. Beginning at cap of sleeve, with No. 5 needles, cast on 37 sts and work pattern as for back (55 sts). Increase 1 st at both ends every other row until there are 100 sts on needle. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Decrease 1 st at both ends every 3rd row until 60 sts remain. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every row until 52 sts remain (11 inches from armhole). Then change to No. 2 needles and work for 4 inches. Bind off. After blocking, sew up shoulder and side seams. Sew sleeve seams and sew into armholes. Sew weight to center of front neck of blouse.
Jacket
Back. With No. 2 needles, cast on 71 sts and work straight in same pattern as blouse for 14 inches.
Armhole. Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then bind off 1 st at both ends of every 2nd row until 14 sts have been decreased at each side. Then work straight until work measures 20 inches from beginning.
Shoulder. Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 6 rows. Bind off remaining sts.
Left Front. Cast on 39 sts and work straight for 14 inches (58 sts).
Armhole. Bind off 8 sts at beginning of next row, and 1 st every 4th row at armhole edge for 10 times, raid at the same time, bind off 1 st every half inch at neck edge until 25 sts remain on needle. Then shape shoulder same as for back.
Right Front. Same as left front.
Sleeves. Cast on 15 sts, work next row in pattern (22 sts). Then increase 1 st at end of each row until 76 sts are on needle. Then, for underarm, cast on 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. * Work 1 inch straight. Then decrease 1 st at each end. Repeat from * till sleeve measures 16 inches.
Bands. (for sleeves) With crochet hook, ch 12, turn. S c in 2nd ch from hook, and s c in each ch st. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until work measures 6½ inches. Make 1 more band.
Front and Neck Band. Ch 11, 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook and in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd to 90th rows incl (or 14 inches): 1 s c in each st, ch 1, turn. 91st row: * Work 5 s c, turn. (Do not ch to turn.) 92nd row: 1 s c in each of 5 s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. 93rd row: 1 s c in each of 5 s c of 92nd row and continue with 1 s c in remaining 5 s c of 90th row, ch 1, turn. 94th row: S c across *. Repeat between *'s 2 more times. Then work straight for 22 inches. Then repeat between *'s once more. Then work 2 rows straight. Then make a buttonhole by working 3 s c, ch 4, skip 4 s c, 3 s c, ch 1, turn and work s c across by making 4 s c over ch-4. Make 3 more buttonholes with 20 rows between buttonholes. Work 24 rows straight after last buttonhole.
Collar. Ch 2, turn. 1st row: 2 s c in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in each s c, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: 2 s c in 1st st, 1 s c in each remaining st, ch 1, turn. 4th row: 1 s c in each st, ch 2, turn. 5th to 50th rows incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows. Work 10 rows straight. Then for next 22 rows decrease 1 st every other row on same side where increases were made (outer edge). Work 8 rows straight. 91st row: * Work 8 s c, turn (no ch to turn). 92nd row: 1 s c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. 93rd row: 1 s c in each s c of previous row and continue with 1 s c in each of 7 remaining sts of 90th row, ch 1, turn. 94th row: 1 s c in each s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat from * 12 more times. The 7th pair of short rows is exact center of collar. Then work other side to correspond. After blocking, sew fronts to back at underarm and shoulder seams. Sew front and neck band to jacket along front edges and across back of neck. Sew collar on in line with seam where band was sewed to jacket. Sew sleeve bands to edges of sleeves and sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeves into jacket. Sew buttons on.
Skirt
Make in 6 sections—a front panel, a back panel and 4 side panels.
Front Panel. Beginning at bottom of skirt, with No. 2 needles, cast on 51 sts and work in pattern 1 inch straight (76 sts). Then decrease 1 st at both ends of one row every 3 inches, till work measures 30 inches.
Back Panel. Same as front panel.
Side Panel. Cast on 35 sts, and work in pattern 10 inches straight (52 sts). Then decrease 1 st at both ends of one row every 2 inches until work measures 28 inches. Work last 2 inches straight. Make 3 more panels same as this.
After blocking, sew a side panel to each side of front panel and back panel (the wider edges forming the bottom of skirt). Then sew the side seams together.
Heading. Work 1 row of s c around waistline. Then * ch 6, 1 sl st into 8th row and 4 sts from hook, ch 6, 1 sl st into 8th s c, and repeat from * around.
