MATERIALS
BERNAT Fleurette—30(31-32) skeins Hunter Green (M C); 1 skein each of Red and Gold
1 pair straight knitting needles No. 2 (standard)
1 24 inch circular knitting needle No. 2 (standard)
1 steel crochet hook No. 4
1 yd elastic
½ yd 2 inch grosgrain ribbon
Snap fasteners
1 pair shoulder pads
GAUGE: 7 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch
SKIRT
NOTE: Any changes in length of skirt are made before first dec round.
Using circular needle and M C, cast on 456(468-480) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Round 1: * P 36(37-38) sts, K 2, repeat from * to end of round. Round 2: * P 36(37- 38) sts, skip the next st, K in back of next st, K skipped st and take both sts off left hand needle (twist), repeat from * to end of round. Repeat these 2 rounds for 2 inches. FIRST DEC ROUND: Work in pattern, dec 1 st in center of each P panel—12 sts dec. Continue in pattern, dec 1 st in center of each P panel every 2 inches until piece measures 19(23-23) inches—348(336-348) sts. On the next round dec 1 st in center of each P panel as before and repeat this dec round every 1 inch until piece measures 29½(29½-30½) inches—216(252-252) sts. On the next round dec 1 st in center of each P panel as before and repeat this dec round every ½ inch until piece measures 30½(31½-32) inches—192(204- 216) sts. Now work in pattern st as follows: Round 1: * K 2, P 2, repeat from * to end of round. Round 2: * Twist next 2 sts, P 2, repeat from * to end of round. Repeat these 2 rounds for 1 inch. Bind off all sts.
BLOUSE
BACK: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 92(100-106) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times. Work even on 112(120-126) sts until piece measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 6(7-7) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4(5-5) times. Work even on 92(96-102) sts until armholes measure 7¼(7½-7¾) inches. SHAPE SHOULDERS: At the beg of each of the next 6(8-6) rows bind off 10(8-11) sts. Bind off remaining 32(32-36) sts.
FRONT: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 100(106- 114) sts. Work even in stockinette st, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾ inch 10 times and AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 3½(4-4¾) inches, SHAPE BIB OPENING: Work to center 36(38-40) sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off these center 36(38-40) sts; work to end of row. Working on both sides at once, at each neck edge bind off 2 sts 5 times. Dec 1 st at same edge every 8th row until arm edge measures 8(8-8½) inches. SHAPE ARMHOLES: At each arm edge bind off 9(10-10) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other-row 5(5-6) times. Continue to dec 1 st at each neck edge every 8th row until there are 10(11-13) sts on each side. Work even until armholes measure 3¼(3½_3¾) inches above bound off sts at arm edge. Bind off.
PATTERN STITCH FOR BIB: Using M C, work in reverse stockinette st for 4 rows. Using Red, work in stockinette st for 4 rows. Using M C, work in reverse stockinette st for 4 rows. Using Gold, work in stockinette st for 4 rows. Repeat these 16 rows for pattern stitch.
LEFT FRONT BIB: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 20(21-22) sts. Work in pattern st, casting oil 2 sts at beg of every other row (arm edge) 5 times. Continue in pattern st, inc 1 st at arm edge every 8th row 8 times and AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 6½(6-5¾) inches, SHAPE NECK: At front edge, dec 1 st every 3rd row until piece measures 7¾(7½-7½) inches, ending at arm edge. At arm edge, cast on 10(11-13) sts. Continue to dec 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row until 30(32-33) sts remain. Work even until piece measures 4 inches above cast on sts at arm edge. SHAPE SHOULDER: At arm edge bind off 10(8-11) sts 3(4-3) times.
RIGHT FRONT BIB: Work to correspond with left front bib, being sure to reverse all shaping.
SLEEVES: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 64(66-68) sts. Work in stockinette st, for 1½ inches, ending with a P row. Put these sts on a holder. Using straight needles and M C, cast on 30(32-34) sts. Work in stockinette st for 1½ inches, ending with a K row. K sts from holder onto this needle. Work is now joined and there are 94(98-102) sts on needle. Continue to work in stockinette st until piece measures 3 inches. On the next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 3 inches 3 times more. Work even on 102(106-110) sts until piece measures 16½(17-17) inches. SHAPE CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 9(10-10) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 3¼(3½-3¾) inches, and EVERY ROW until cap measures 4¼(4½-4¾) inches. At the beg of each of the next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
LEFT CUFF: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 52(54- 56) sts. Work in stockinette st, inc 1 st at beg of every K row for 1 inch. Then dec 1 st at beg of every K row for 1 inch. Bind off.
RIGHT CUFF: Work to correspond with left cuff, inc and dec at end of every K row.
COLLAR: Using straight needles and M C, cast on 130(134- 140) sts. Work in stockinette st for 2 rows. At the beg of each of the next 16 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off remaining sts.
FINISHING: NOTE: Purl side of work is used as right side. Using M C, work 2 rows s c around bottom of skirt. Block blouse pieces. Using M C, work 2 rows s c around bib opening on front. Sew bib in place, being sure that right front laps over left front for ½ inch. Starting at bottom edge, seam lapover for 3 inches. Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Sew cuffs to sleeves, easing in fullness evenly. Face cuffs with ribbon. Close each cuff with 2 snap fasteners. Using M C, work 2 rows s c around shaped edge of collar. Sew collar in place. Close bib opening with snap fasteners. Sew blouse and skirt tog. Make a beading on inside waistline and run elastic, cut to waist measurement, through beading. Re-block. Sew in shoulder pads.
