Before starting to knit, wind part of the thread (about ¼ of ball) into a 2nd ball, to be used when working hand.

RIGHT GLOVE … Starting at the cuff, cast on very loosely

48 sts
52 sts

Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work around in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2". Knit 1 rnd, decreasing evenly around to

32 sts
36 sts
40 sts

Join the 2nd ball of thread and work around in pattern with double thread as follows: 1st rnd: P 1, k 1 alternately around. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds for pattern 2 more times. Start increasing for thumb gore as follows: 1st rnd: P 1, inc 2 sts in the next st—to inc 2 sts, knit in the front, in the back and in the front again of the same st; p 1, insert a marker on the needle, then work k 1, p 1 alternately for the remainder of rnd. 2nd rnd: P 1, k 3, p 1, slip the marker (5 sts in thumb gore). Knit remainder of rnd. 3rd rnd: P 1, k 3, p 1, slip marker, k 1, p 1 alternately for remainder of rnd. 4th rnd: Inc 1 st in 1st st—to inc in a purl st, purl in the back and then in the front of the st; k 2, inc 1 st in next st, p 1, slip marker, knit remainder of rnd. 5th and 6th rnds: P 1, k 5, p 1 (7 sts in thumb gore), slip marker, work in pattern around. Continue in this manner, increasing 2 sts for thumb gore on every 3rd rnd by increasing in the 1st purl st and in the st before the 2nd purl st (all sts of thumb gore are worked in stockinette st and remainder of glove in pattern), until there are in thumb gore

Next rnd: Take the sts of the thumb gore off on a safety pin, to be worked later. Cast on 3 sts for inside of thumb, slip the marker, join and work around in pattern until glove measures, from end of ribbing (ending at marker)
