MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—36 inches. Length from top of shoulder—21½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—20 inches.

GAUGE: (Pattern) 22 sts make 3 inches; 9 rows make 1 inch.

BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 117 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches, increasing 10 sts at equal distances apart on last row (127 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and work as follows: 1st row: * (P 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice. 2nd row: * (K 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: * (P 1, k 1) twice; then make a braid st (to make a braid st, slip next 3 sts onto extra, double-pointed needle, and hold in back of work; k next 3 sts, bring sts on extra needle to front of work, k next 3 sts, then k sts on extra needle); (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (p 1, k 1) twice, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice. 6th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 12 rows (5th to 16th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 12½ inches in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 97 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each row until 33 sts remain. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 60 sts and work in ribbing for 4 inches, making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge after the 1st inch and every 3 inches thereafter until 6 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; on next row cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off), increasing 7 sts at equal distances apart on last row of ribbing (67 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and, starting at front edge, work as follows: 1st row: (P 1, k 1) 5 times, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice, * k 5, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice. Repeat from * once more. 2nd row: * (K 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * once more, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) 5 times. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: (P 1, k 1) 5 times, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice, * k 5, (p 1, k 1) twice, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice. Repeat from * once more. 6th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 12 rows (5th to 16th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 12½ inches in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: Bind off 6 sts at underarm edge; then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 52 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape neck, starting at front edge, bind off 10 sts. Work across remaining sts, keeping armhole edge straight, and decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 10 times; at the same time, when piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 8 sts at armhole edge every other row 4 times.

LEFT FRONT. Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.

SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 51 sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches, increasing 10 sts on last row (61 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and work as follows: 1st row: * (P 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * once more, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice. 2nd row: * (K 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 5. Repeat from * once more, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: * (P 1, k 1) twice, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * once more, (p 1, k 1) twice, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice. 6th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 12 rows (5th to 16th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 9th row thereafter until there are 89 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 19 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 9 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up shoulder seams, being careful to match pattern. Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 112 sts all around neck edge and work in ribbing, making a buttonhole as before, directly in line with previous buttonholes, after the 1st ¼ inch. Work straight until ribbing measures ¾ inch. Bind off loosely.

Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
