MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 5 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).
An 8-inch slide fastener.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—36 inches. Length from top of shoulder—19 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—4 inches.
GAUGE: 17 sts make 2 inches; 11 rows make 1 inch.
BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 156 sts. 1st row: K 2, p 2, * k 4, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2. 2nd row: P 2, k 2, * p 4, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending with p 2. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 4 inches. Next row: With No. 2 needles k 4; with No. 1 needles continue in ribbing as before to within last 4 sts; with No. 2 needles k 4. Following row: With No. 2 needles p 4; continue in ribbing to within last 4 sts; with No. 2 needles p 4. Next row: With No. 2 needles k 8; with No. 1 needles continue in ribbing to within last 8 sts; with No. 2 needles k 8. Following row: With No. 2 needles p 8, continue in ribbing to within last 8 sts; with No. 2 needles p 8. Hereafter continue in this manner, always changing 4 sts at both sides of every other row to stockinette st, until all sts are in stockinette st. Then, using No. 2 needles only, work straight until piece measures 9 inches in all.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 118 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 46 sts remain. Bind off.
FRONT. Work exactly as for Back until 32 sts at each side are changed to stockinette st. Hereafter use No. 1 needles for ribbing, and No. 2 needles for stockinette st. Next row: Work in stockinette st across 1st 32 sts; work across next 92 sts in ribbing; work in stockinette st across remaining 32 sts. Repeat this row 20 more times. Following row: Work 32 sts in stockinette st, and next 32 sts in ribbing; then work 4 sts in stockinette st; next 20 sts in ribbing; 4 sts in stockinette st; 32 sts in ribbing; 32 sts in stockinette st. Next row: 32 sts in stockinette st; 32 sts in ribbing; 4 sts in stockinette st; 12 sts in ribbing; 4 sts in stockinette st; 32 sts in ribbing; 32 sts in stockinette st. Continue in this manner until the center 28 sts are changed to stockinette st. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 78 sts, turn (thus starting center front opening). Work over these 78 sts only, increasing 1 st in center stockinette st section every 10th row 12 times in all; but, when piece measures 9 inches, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm, bind off 7 sts every other row twice, and dec. 1 st every other row 5 times. Continuing with increases, work until front opening measures 8 inches. Then, starting at center front edge, bind off 3 sts every other row 4 times, and dec. 1 st every other row 5 times; at the same time, when piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 6 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off. Break off. Attach yarn at base of center front opening, and work opposite side to correspond.
SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles, cast on 84 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Next row: With No. 2 needles k 34; with No. 1 needles inc. 1 st in each of next 16 sts; with No. 2 needles k 34. Following row: With No. 2 needles p 34; with No. 1 needles k 2, p 4, alternately across next 32 sts; with No. 2 needles p 34. Continue in this manner, keeping the center 32 sts in ribbing, and increasing 1 st at both ends of every 4th row 8 times in all (116 sts). To shape top of sleeve, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 68 sts remain. Now bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 32 sts remain. Bind off.
COLLAR. Starting at neck edge, with No. 1 needles cast on 120 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2½ inches. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in, easing in the extra fullness across the center 3 inches at top of shoulder. Sew collar all around neck edge. Sew slide fastener along both sides of center front opening.
