Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
A 12-inch slide fastener.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—35½ inches. Length from top of shoulder—19½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—4 inches.
GAUGE: 13 sts make 2 inches; 7 rows make 1 inch.
BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 6 needles cast on 98 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Then work 3 inches in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row). Inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 114 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10 inches in all.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 86 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 38 sts remain. Bind off.
FRONT. Starting at bottom, with No. 6 needles cast on 104 sts and work in ribbing for 1 inch. Then work 2 inches in stockinette st. Inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until there are 114 sts on needle. (Piece should measure 5½ inches at this point.) On next row, work across 1st 57 sts, turn (thus starting front opening). Hereafter work over these 57 sts only, increasing 1 st at underarm edge on next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 64 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches in all.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: Starting at underarm edge, bind off 6 sts once; then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every row until 40 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 6 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Then dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 10 times; at the same time, when piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row 8 times. Attach yarn at base of front opening, and work to correspond.
SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 needles cast on 70 sts and work in ribbing for ¾ inch. Change to No. 6 needles and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 3rd row thereafter until there are 84 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 14 sts remain. Bind off.
Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in.
NECK BAND. With right side of work toward you, pick up 92 sts all around neck edge with No. 3 needles, and work in ribbing for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely. Sew slide fastener along front opening.
