MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—36 inches. Length from top of shoulder—18 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—4 inches.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 needles cast on 90 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and k across, increasing 10 sts at equal distances apart (100 sts). Hereafter work in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row), increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row until there are 112 sts on needle. Work straight for 2 inches.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 84 sts remain, ending with a p row. Then work as follows: 1st row: K 1, p 1; (k 3, p 5) 4 times; k 13, turn (thus starting center back opening). 2nd row: K 10; (p 3, k 5) 4 times; p 3, k 2. 3rd row: K 1, p 1; * place yarn at back of work, insert right-hand needle as if to p through next st, k the 2nd st and draw it off left-hand needle, insert needle through 1st st as if to p and k the 3rd st in the same manner; then drop 1st st from left-hand needle (thus a cross st is made); p 5. Repeat from * 3 more times, make another cross st, k 10. 4th row: K 10; (p 1, O, p 1, k 5) 4 times; p 1, O, p 1, k 2. 5th row: K 1, p 1; (k 1, O, sl the O of previous row as if to p, k 1, p 5) 4 times; k 1, O, sl O as if to p, k 11. 6th row: K 10; (p 1, p two O's tog., p 1, k 5) 4 times; p 1, p two O's tog., p 1, k 2. 7th row: K 1, p 1; (k 3, p 5) 4 times, k 13. 8th row: K 10; (p 3, k 5) 4 times; p 3, k 2. The last 6 rows (3rd to 8th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, making a buttonhole 4 sts in from center back edge on next row and every 2 inches thereafter until 3 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 2 sts; on next row, cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off). Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 7 sts every other row 4 times. Bind off remaining sts. Break off. Cast on 10 sts and, starting at base of center back opening, work across remaining 37 sts to correspond, omitting buttonholes.

FRONT. Work exactly as for Back until there are 112 sts on needle. Work 1 inch straight. With right side of work toward you, work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 46, p 2, k 3, p 10, k 3, p 2, k 46. 2nd row: K 1, p 45, k 2, p 3, k 10, p 3, k 2, p 45, k 1. 3rd row: K 46, p 2, make a cross st, p 10, make another cross st, p 2, k 46. 4th row: K 1, p 45, k 2, p 1, O, p 1, k 10, p 1, O, p 1, k 2, p 45, k 1. 5th row: K 46, p 2, k 1, O, sl O of previous row as if to p, k 1, p 10, k 1, O, sl O of previous row as if to p, k 1, p 2, k 46. 6th row: K 1, p 45, k 2, p 1, p two O's tog., p 1, k 10, p 1, p two O's tog., p 1, k 2, p 45, k 1. 7th row: K 38, p 2; (k 3, p 5) twice; (p 5, k 3) twice, p 2, k 38 (thus another pattern is started at both sides of previous patterns). 8th row: K 1, p 37, k 2; (p 3, k 5) twice; (k 5, p 3) twice, k 2, p 37, k 1.

Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 35 sts, bind off 14 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue in pattern across remaining 35 sts. Hereafter work over the last 35 sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row until 30 sts remain; but, when piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 10 sts at armhole edge every other row 3 times. Break off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.

Hereafter work in stockinette st until piece measures 4 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, and dec. 1 st at end of following 2 rows. Repeat these last 4 rows until 68 sts remain. On next row, with right side of work toward you, k 1; (k 3 tog.) 22 times, k 1. Then p 1 row. Bind off.

With No. 5 needles, cast on 2 sts. 1st row: Inc. in 1st st, k 1. 2nd and all even rows: K across. 3rd row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 1. 5th row: K 1, inc. in next st, k 2. 7th row: K 1, inc. in next st, k remaining sts. 8th row: K across.
