SIZE 16
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 8 balls (1 oz. balls) of color A, 3 balls of color B, and 1 ball of Color C. If ½ oz. balls are used, buy twice the amount specified.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
6 buttons.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—35½ inches. Length from top of shoulder—19½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—18 inches.
GAUGE: (Stockinette st) 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.
Body of blouse is worked in alternating stripes: Ribbing of k 1, p 1, in color A; stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) in color B. Change color and stitch after every 3 inches by working 1 k row in new color, holding right side of work toward you.
BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles and color A, cast on 100 sts and work in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 6 needles and color B, and work in stockinette st for 3 inches. Continue alternating 3-inch stripes of ribbing and stockinette st until piece measures 11 inches in all.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 68 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, working entirely in stockinette st after the 3rd rib stripe is completed. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 26 sts remain. Bind off.
RIGHT FRONT. Starting at bottom with No. 4 needles and color A, cast on 58 sts and work in ribbing, making a buttonhole 6 sts in from front edge after the 1st 1½ inches and every 3 inches thereafter until 6 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts; on next row cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off) but, when piece measures 3 inches, change to No. 6 needles and color B, and work 3 inches in stockinette st. Continue alternating 3-inch stripes of ribbing and stockinette st until piece measures 11 inches in all.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLE: Starting at underarm edge, bind off 6 sts. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every row 4 times, then dec. 1 st every other row until 40 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, working entirely in stockinette st after the 3rd rib stripe. On next row, starting at front edge, bind off 6 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Then dec. 1 st at neck edge every row 13 times; at the same time, when piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row 7 times.
LEFT FRONT. Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.
SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles and color A cast on 42 sts and work 3 inches in ribbing. Change to No. 6 needles and continue ribbing, increasing 1 st at both ends of row when piece measures 4 inches and every inch thereafter until 68 sts are on needle.
Work straight until piece measures 18 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 32 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up shoulder and underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in, easing in the fullness across center 3 inches at top of shoulder. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
EMBROIDERY. With 2 strands of color C, work over-and-over stitches between stripes of both Fronts, each stitch to cover 4 sts, 2 of each stripe (see illustration). Finish neck and Right Front edges in same manner.
