SIZE 16
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 9 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
7 buttons.
MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—36 inches. Length from top of shoulder—22½ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—18 inches.
GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 2 needles cast on 108 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 4 inches. Change to No. 3 needles and k across, increasing 18 sts at equal distances apart (126 sts). Work in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 9 inches.
TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 4 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 90 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 42 sts remain. Bind off.
POCKET LININGS (Make 2). It is wise to have these made, ready to be worked into Fronts. Cast on 21 sts and work in stockinette st for 3 inches. Lay this piece aside.
RIGHT FRONT. Starting at bottom, with No. 2 needles cast on 68 sts. 1st row: K 10, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2. 2nd row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * to within last 10 sts; k 10. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 4 inches, making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge (garter st edge is front edge) after the 1st 1¼ inches. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Change to No. 3 needles and, starting at front edge, k across entire row, increasing 8 sts at equal distances apart (76 sts). Next row: P across 1st 21 sts, bind off 21 sts, p across 24 sts, k 10. Following row: K 34, then k across the 21 sts of one pocket lining, k across remaining 21 sts (76 sts). Hereafter work in stockinette st, keeping the 10 sts at center front edge in garter st all the way up to neck edge, and make a buttonhole at center front edge every 3 inches until 7 buttonholes in all are made but, when piece measures 13 inches, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm, bind off 7 sts every other row twice. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 54 sts remain. Work straight until the 7th buttonhole is completed. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 16 sts once (thus starting neck shaping), and 3 sts every other row twice; then dec. 1 st every other row until 30 sts in all are decreased at neck edge; but when piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off.
LEFT FRONT. Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.
SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 2 needles cast on 52 sts and work in ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 90 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 18 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 52 sts remain. Now bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain.
Bind off.
Sew up shoulder seams.
NECK BAND. With right side of work toward you, pick up 142 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing for ½ inch. Bind off.
Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew pocket linings in place. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
