GAUGE: (Pattern) 13 sts make 2 inches; 7 rows make 1 inch.

BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles cast on 100 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches (if a cuff waistband is desired, work ribbing for 8 inches, for which 2 additional skeins will be required), increasing 24 sts at equal distances apart on last row (124 sts). Change to No. 6 needles and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: (Right side of work) P 18, * k 2, p 4, k 2, p 12. Repeat from * 3 more times, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 18. 2nd row: K 18, * p 2, k 4, p 2, k 12. Repeat from * 3 more times, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 18. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: P 18, * make a circle st (to make a circle st, slip next 6 sts onto extra, double-pointed needle, and hold in back of work; k 2, slip 4 sts from extra needle back onto left hand needle and hold extra needle in front of work; p 4, then k the 2 sts on extra needle); p 12. Repeat from * 3 more times, make a circle st, p 18. 6th to 14th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 10 rows (5th to 14th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until 5 circle st rows have been completed. Then repeat only the 2nd and 1st rows alternately until piece measures 13 inches in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 94 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 9 sts at beginning of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off.

FRONT. Work as for Back until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work across 1st 33 sts, bind off 28 sts (thus starting neck shaping), work across remaining 33 sts. Hereafter work over the last 33 sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge each row until 27 sts remain. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 9 sts every other row until all sts are worked off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.

SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 4 needles cast on 46 sts and work in ribbing for 4 inches, increasing 8 sts on last row (54 sts). Change to No. 6 needles and work as follows: 1st row: (Right side of work) P 3, * k 2, p 4, k 2, p 12. Repeat from * once more, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 3. 2nd row: K 3, * p 2, k 4, p 2, k 12. Repeat from * once more, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 3. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: P 3, * circle st, p 12. Repeat from * once more, circle st, p 3. 6th to 14th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 10 rows (5th to 14th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until there are 64 sts on needle. When 5 circle st rows have been completed, work as follows: 1st row: With wrong side of work toward you, k 8, * p 2, k 4, p 2, k 12. Repeat from * once more, p 2, k 4, p 2, k 8. 2nd row: P 8, * k 2, p 4, k 2, p 12. Repeat from * once more, k 2, p 4, k 2, p 8. Repeat the last 2 rows, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until there are 76 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 40 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 14 sts remain.
