Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 10 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size).
8 buttons.
Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
Back: Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 114 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work as follows: 1st row: P 5, * k 12, p 5, k 1 in back half of next st, p 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 12, p 5. 2nd row: K 5, * p 12, k 5, p 1, k 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 12, k 5. 3rd to 8th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately. 9th row: P 5, * then make a wishbone st (to make a wishbone st, slip off next 3 sts on a stitch holder; keeping the stitch holder in back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts on stitch holder, then slip the next 3 sts onto stitch holder; keeping it in front of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts on stitch holder), p 5, k 1 into the back of next st, p 5. Repeat from * across, ending with a wishbone st, p 5. 10th row: K 5, * p 12, k 5, p 1, k 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 12, k 5. These 10 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter, until there are 126 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 108 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each row until 48 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.
Front. Work as for Back to end of armhole shaping. On next row, with right side of work toward you, work in pattern across first 45 sts, then (k 1, p 1) 4 times, k 1, turn (thus starting center front opening). Work in pattern over these 54 sts, keeping the 9 sts of center front opening in ribbing of k 1, p 1, and making a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge, after the 1st ½ inch and every 10th row thereafter, until 3 buttonholes are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts; then, on next row, cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off). Work straight for ½ inch. Then, starting at neck edge, work in ribbing across 1st 9 sts. Slip these 9 sts onto a stitch holder, and continue pattern across. Hereafter, work over these 45 sts, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row until 30 sts remain. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row 5 times. Attach yarn at base of front opening and work opposite side to correspond.
Sleeve. Starting at wrist, with No. 1 needles, cast on 58 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches, increasing 10 sts on the last row (68 sts). Change to No. 5 needles and work in pattern as for Back, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row until there are 90 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 18 inches. To shape top of sleeves, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row, until 22 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up shoulder seams.
Neck Band: Starting at center front, with right side of work toward you, slip the 9 sts from the stitch holder onto the No. 1 needle, then pick up 107 sts all around neck edge, slip next 9 sts from stitch holder, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch, making a buttonhole as before 3 sts in from both front edges after the 1st ½ inch. Bind off tightly.
Tabs: With No. 1 needles cast on 15 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 rows, then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row, and every 4th row thereafter, until there are 23 sts on needle. Work 4 more rows straight. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 3 sts remain. Bind off. Make another same as this.
Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew on tabs as in illustration. Work a chain for each pair of buttons about 1½ inches long and sew a button on each end.
