Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 3rd row thereafter, until 92 sts remain, working as follows: 15th and 16th rows: Repeat 11th and 12th rows. 17th and 18th rows: Repeat 9th and 10th rows. 19th and 20th rows: Repeat 7th and 8th rows. 21st and 22nd rows: Repeat 5th and 6th rows. 23rd and 24th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows. 25th and 26th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 3rd to 26th rows incl. constitute the pattern. Repeat 3rd to 26th rows incl. until piece measures 6 inches. Then, continuing in pattern inc. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row, until there are 108 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 92 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 10 rows. Then on next row, bind off 3 sts, work in pattern across next 15 sts, bind off 24 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue in pattern across. Hereafter, continuing with shoulder shaping, dec. 1st at neck edge every row until all sts are worked off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 62 sts and work as for Back (omitting decreases) until piece measures 2¾ inches. Then, with right side of work toward you (the right side of work is the side with the stockinette st diamond), make a buttonhole on next row and every 3 inches thereafter, 4 sts in from front edge, until 5 buttonholes in all are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then inc. 1 st at underarm side on next row and every 6th row thereafter, until there are 70 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 8 sts and continue across. Hereafter dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 51 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 10 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue across. Hereafter dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row until 21 sts are decreased, at the same time, when armhole measures 7 inches, shape shoulder as before until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 48 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Then work in pattern as for Back, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 7th row thereafter until there are 80 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 20 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.

Neck Band. With right side of work toward you, pick up 84 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, making a buttonhole, as before, after the 1st ½ inch and directly in line with previous buttonholes. Work straight until ribbing measures 1 inch. Bind off.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
