JACKET
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 112 sts and work in moss st (on one row k 1, p 1, alternately across and on the next row, k over the p sts, and p over the k sts), decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 9th row until 100 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of every 8th row until 112 sts are on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11 inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 100 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 36 sts remain. Bind off.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 72 sts and work as for Back, decreasing 1 st at underarm side every 7th row, but when piece measures 2½ inches (with right side of work toward you) work across 1st 51 sts, turn (this is inner edge). Hereafter work over these 51 sts, decreasing 1 st at inner edge (pocket edge) until 23 sts remain; at the same time, when piece measures 3 inches, make a buttonhole 4 sts in from front edge on next row, and every 2¾ inches thereafter, until 5 buttonholes in all are made. (To make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; and on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Break off. Attach yarn at base of pocket and continue with the usual decreases at side edge, at the same time increasing 1 st at pocket edge each row until 28 sts are increased, ending at pocket edge. Break off. Attach yarn at front edge and work across entire row. Hereafter continue with decreases until 64 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then inc. 1 st at side edge every 7th row until there are 72 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 12 inches.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm side, bind off 6 sts and continue across. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row 8 times; at the same time dec. 1 st at front edge every 3rd row until 32 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 8 sts every other row until all sts are bound off.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.
Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 56 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 9th row until there are 92 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 64 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st at end of each row until 24 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams. Find center top of sleeve and mark with a pin. Measure off 1½ inches on each side of pin, and mark. Then measure off 2 inches on each side of these last 2 pins, and mark; remove center pin (4 pin marks in all). Make ½ inch dart at each pin, graduating it into nothing 1 inch from top edge. Sew darts on wrong side (thus making 4 darts). Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.
Lining for Pockets: With right side of work toward you, pick up 28 sts across upper part of pocket and work in moss st for 5 inches. Bind off. Sew pocket lining in place on wrong side. Starting at outer edge of pocket, make a ¼ inch vertical tuck, working upwards for 4¾ inches. Then make a similar tuck, starting at shoulder, 2 inches in from neck edge, and working downwards until tuck measures 7 inches, then continue diagonally toward the armhole shaping (See illustration). Work other side to correspond.
SKIRT
Starting at bottom, cast on 322 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. 1st rnd: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * around. 2nd rnd: * P 1, k 1. Repeat from * around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until piece measures 5 inches. Next rnd: Work in pattern across 161 sts; mark the last st with a safety pin. Then work in pattern across remaining 161 sts and mark the last st with a safety pin. These 2 pins indicate the places where decreases are to be made. Next rnd: * Work in pattern to within the safety pin, then k 2 tog. twice (thus decreasing 2 sts); work across to within the next pin and dec. 2 sts as before. Work 11 rnds without decreasing. Repeat from * until 262 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 24 inches. ** Make another decrease rnd as before. Work 3 rnds straight. Repeat from ** until 202 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 30 inches or length desired. Bind off, but do not break off.
Beading: * Ch 6, sl st in 6th row on wrong side and 4 sts to the left. Ch 6, sl st in 6th st from last st at top edge. Repeat from * forming V's for elastic casing. Break off. Run elastic through beading.
